Got the old zaust of this morning and worked out how I'm going to run the new one. Then I dropped the old gearbox back in and refitted the new intercooler and rad. All the pipework seems to route well and clear everything. Much tidier than the last setup. :-) Plenty of room for a second smaller rad fan. I may run that one constantly and have it on a timed relay along with a small pump to circulate coolant through the turbo after shutdown.

thats looking very promising. Good catch getting that bearing out before it completely shot the box to bits.. remember my brother having a 1 lite one of these and the thing would pull nearly 40mph in first gear.. (he wasnt afraid of high revs) a reg one.. brilliant thing to drive as well

Very lucky! With the new box it should pull 50 in first, 75 in second, 95 in third and at least 125 in 4th.
We're just sorting out the maifolds and feeds etc for the new turbo. Hoping to break the 200bhp mark this year ;D

Standard Dash Diet Dash Not the most scientific of measuring sticks, but it's good enough as a guide. It had the heater at 7KG :-) So with a few other bits and bob's that's 12KG out of it already.

Partial defeat by the gearbox last night. However Andy devised a novel way of assembling synchro hubs with a tie wrap.

Lots of progress this week :-) Benross Racing have nearly finished the head refurb/upgrade, should be a cracker when it's done. The block has been stripped and drilled for 11 head studs. That'll be getting dropped into Force Racing for new cam bearings tomorrow. There oil fed thrusts have done their job well, the thrusts are near on perfect after a load of abuse on the road and drag strip. The new rotating assembly will be going for balancing tomorrow too. The new box is just about done, just need to fit the diff. New exhaust is nearly sorted. Got the new turbo butchered onto the metro manifold. Getting there.

Some ham fisted sod has snapped the bit of the waste gate arm that holds the actuator arm on (before we got the turbo). So I've wobbled up a new one. Turned out OK. Then we pulled the engine out of my mini, dropped it in the van and shoved a few things on. Should all fit and work. Actuator will be a bit of a pain though.

Got the oil drain sorted. Not pretty, but it should do the job. Got the down pipe sorted. All lines up nicely, just needs welding up. Got the short engine built. Finished the gearbox And stuck them together Benross Racing has also finished the head refurb/upgrade. New guides and 30/36 stainless valves. In comparison to it's original 'Stage 3' porting, the chambers are massive and the ports look great, should be a big improvement. :-) Getting there :-)

Thanks. We can see the light at the end of the tunnel now.
I'm not aware of anybody else who has put a GT17 down the back of a metro engine, hopefully another first :-)

Got the downpipe welded up. Noticed a bit of a restriction in the mouth. So I ground it out a bit

It wouldn't be our van with out a rusty hole in the floor come MOT time... Exhaust and fuel plumbing is sorted. I've shifted the fuel filter out of the way and plumbed it in after the pump. Got most things slung in place in the engine bay, should all fit OK... Also whipped the interior out so that John can have the pleasure of chipping of the sound deadening from the floors :-)

Love this car! I love the constant tinkering! so cool.
BTW- what weight oil are you running in your carb? Older SUs are meant to have have 20 weight but I have heard the HIFs like yours (and mine) should have 20/50 like say Gtx?

Thanks. Hopefully the tinkering will be done soon and we can start driving it again!
We use propper SU damper oil. engine oil, 3 in 1 etc is no good as it's not what the carb as designed to run with.
