Car derived vans are very popular in Ireland, so there are lots of them over there. I guess the biggest difference between here and there is that people in England will scrap a car because it needs £200 spending on it, but in Ireland, they use them until they are pretty much dead and then let them sit in the back garden for years, before they eventually go off to the scrap yard. That and the rain, no shortage of rain in Ireland.
Both my parents are Irish (mum has 12 brothers and sisters and my dad has 18!) and my dad's mum had a massive rear garden where all of the family used to just leave there old cars to die. I remember many fond holiday's playing around in all the cars when I was just a kid.
When my nan wanted them all cleared away, by dad borrowed a JCB and buried the lot of them in the garden (she had a couple of acres), so it'll be funny if the land is ever developed in the future!
My dad also had a mk2 transit custom when he worked over here, the engine went back on the way in to work one morning, so he got it towed in to the building site and dug a big hole and buried that one too! So if anyone is ever over at Prospect Park in Reading with a metal detector, don't be surprised if you get a big hit right outside the restaurant at the top of the park!
Up the Irish.
