That'll be because the guy who helped design a lot of the american cars(camaro, firebird, toronado) also designed the british ones you mentioned. The guy's name was Wayne Cherry and he was responsible for a lot of the middle to late 60's GM designs, and beyond. You can't steal from yourself! Remember that Vauxhall were (since 1908) owned by the GM.. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayne_CherryWell, stealing maybe not, but they were still sold as British designs. Saying that, I'm not sure who coined which shape first, as the FD had that back end before the Malibu did... --Phil

I guess it's a bit like the current Vauxhall/Opel situation where technological and design resources are pooled to keep costs down as much as possible.

Exactly the same, and once again Wayne Cherry was involved in the start of doing that.. Read the wikipedia link about him that i posted and you'll know all about him... ;D

Series 1 Sunbeam Rapier Looks an awful lot like....... Studebaker Golden Hawk Raymond Lowey's Design consultancy company had a hand in designing the original '53 Studebaker coupe & its restyling into the Hawk. And had also been asked to submit design ideas/proposals for the '55-6(?) Hillman Minx.....

Thanks for that Cord although TBH I'm a little disappointed..... industrial espionage creates a more interesting background for plagiarism than 'design consultancy input' will ever do.

Marina Sports Coupe! Used much of the floorpan and bulkhead, as well as the doors - part of Roy Haynes Big Plan for BL before Stokes cocked it all up. The Jag version used a straight six.... I didn't realise that they were planning a Jag' version of the Condor.... but if it was Marina based I guess it would have been given the 1700cc 4 pot to compete with the Ford 1600/2000cc Capris. Not giving the buyer an option to compete with the 3 litre Ford V6 I think was a big mistake for GM with the Manta and Chrysler's Rapier too. GM offered the straight 6 2800cc but only in the LHD model whilst Chrysler's H120 version of the rapier was only a marginal improvement in performance on the standard 1725cc 4 pot lump. Haynes planned to have five variations on the Marina floorpan to produce seven different models of car, which is why the pan has lots of 'redundant' suspension and fitting points including for Macpherson struts..... The MG Condor would be the C series, the Jag the XK and a 'hot' Rover V8 for the US market. All stillborn, sadly. Oh, which Hymek do you play with?

Oh, which Hymek do you play with? I bought this one off British Railways in 1982 for the megabuck price of £2750 Had been out of traffic for several years and was in a derelict state but retro locomotives can be revived same as retro cars if you have the time and the money to spend. Is D7076 and is based on the East Lancashire Railway. Is fitted with a twin turbo'd V16 Maybach diesel engine. Makes one hell of a roar at full chat!! ;D Here's a pic of her outside the engine shed.

That is a big shame as I really think that they were on to something with this car. The Manta, Capri and Rapier were all nice cars to own in there day and appealed to a younger generation. Probably only the Dolomite Sprint had the same appeal in the Leyland stable but that was only available as a 4 door saloon. Definitely a missed opportunity for BL there.

LMAO Bigtime!! ;D Don't get down there much these days........ can't do with all the politics and stuff... was excellent hobby in the early days when it was just a handful of guys doing what they enjoyed doing. Just before I left I'd bought an American Quarter Horse and was getting into barrel racing ...... and now I'm hooked on the whole western thing. Is very addictive if you're an adrenalin junkie. ;D Not being funny or anything but I'm in danger of hijacking my own thread and being excommunicated from RR by Hotwire so..... is best you PM me if you wanna talk locomotives or American Quarter Horses and rodeo riding cos I'm up for that as well!! ;D

Blimey, any chance we can have a thread in readers other mods for this stuff? Something I think I'm not the only RR-er who'd like to hear a littl more about. In penance: this *has* to be american influenced via Italy to Canley.

MGB seems to have been heavily influenced by the Datsun Roadster YES the Datsun came out some time before the MGB

I'ts a bit late to do a rebuild thread on the Hymek cos although it took 5 or 6 of us 7 years of Sundays (not every Sunday but an awful lot of 'em) there wasn't the internet like there is now so we didn't take many pics. Maybe Marinanut could do one for his English Electric type 3 or Growler as they were affectionately known as if there is enough interest. The Hymek has been in traffic for almost 20 years now. As for Steamboat (my horse) I'll try to remember to take some pics when he comes up for his next full overhaul!! ;D
