curse word yeah.. I knew there was something.... doh.. si No worries bud ;D And a iddy biddy update, today after work i changed the oil for the correct 5w/30 and found an oil filter the same size as the renault one i originally fitted but with a non-return valve built in so should have fixed the cold oil pressure problem Steve

Like the conversion! Wheels especially subtle...Ref the axle, I fiited a Scimitar axle (Salisbury 4HA) to the rally Hb I built. It has just returned from Peking to Paris rally and gave no issues whatsoever. The biggest headache I found was the std Viva top links. Rather than replicate that setup we went for two top links and a Panhard rod... More fabbing, but strong and simple. With the cetre diff section being cast, adding OE type mounts would not be straighforward....Hubs are big and flat so can be redrilled to suit 4" PCD, We took the opportunity to convert to 100mm using M12 studs (front hubs too) as this makes finding wheels easier plus the stud is a fraction bigger and available off the shelf! Look forward to the progress...

In other news........my car is poorly It decided that it didnt like its new thermostat and told me so by emptying its cooling system in a fit of rage one evening.......filled it back up but its not happy as the the top hose aint getting warm even when the temp gauge is over half.....might have popped the headgasket not the end of the world as i was planning to take the head off at some point for a bit of porting and been thinking about doing a bike carb/body conversion which in order to do would have meant taking the head off anyway as there aint enough clearance between the inlet and the brake servo to take off the inlet with the engine in-situ.........call it a tight fit Progress is gonna be slow for awhile in terms of collecting parts as I'm outta work yet again........but with that also means that since i cant afford to run the car (back on the bike me thinks) i can take it apart and also tidy up some of the little bits i rushed when doing the conversion Steve

If the coolant hoses are cold it doesnt sound like headgasket to me, is the water circulating? the water pump might be on its last legs or duff stat? Id do a compression & sniff test before condemning it. I hear ya mate, was gonna do a sniff test after this crimbo malarky finishes I'm suspecting the 'stat as i changed it for a higher temp one in an attempt to get the heater to work properly but the aftermarket one i got was a curse word fit and finish so wouldnt be suprised if it doesnt do what its meant to......gonna order up an O.E stat from ford.

so much for modern reliable running gear Hope its getting better, I have a nice viva engine in storage near you could put back in if all fails ;D ha ha too true paul.. ive done many engine conversions and modded old cars and 9 times out of ten its only the more modern components that fail the old stuff still outlasts the new bits.. odd really... although i doubt much is up on the old ford engine.. i froze mine with no antifreeze several times busted a rad blew the water out a few times and the engine was still good with HG intact.. strong old motors these.... si

Gave the thing a clean a few days ago: At the same time i removed the flyeyes from the headlights as it was starting to look a bit curse word and ive got to take the o/s out at some point to replace the glass cos its been hit by a stone Today i did a traveller job of my speedo cable......... A small section of a Sierra cable attatched to the original Viva cable via a chopped down electrical connector, it works but doesnt look pretty. Found that the gearbox mount rubber has turned to mush which explains the slight movement I'm getting on hard gearchanges so gotta get another sorted soon, will be giving the g'box crossmember a coat of paint when its off Gotta go and collect a poorly MK3 Cavalier SRi tomorrow which i will prob end up breaking as its had a nasty hit in the rear anything of any use to the Viva will be saved of course but the rest will prob be put up here including the sweet running 8valve lump. It tried to have a fit the other day so decided to take the 'stat out only to find that Ford designed the 'stat housing in such a way that the seal for it has to be attatched to the 'stat for it to seal so just gutted the new 'stat until i can get a genuine Ford jobbie in there. Think i was jumping the gun a little on assuming the HG had gone

Small running report Since doing the speedo cable ive also changed the front brake pads and to try and "balance" the propshaft a little by putting a jubilee clip on it.......what a difference!!!!!! Brakes feel great now they are bedded in and the rumble i used to get over 70 mph has now pretty much gone! These two simple things have made the car much more of a pleasure to drive now all i have to do is sort the tracking out as the steering has started feeling a little "off" recently......gonna be a bit of a challenge as the front is now so low i doubt i'll get the tracking gauges on there Apart from that, might start looking at dealing with mot stuff soon.....got some new holes in the n/s sill to deal with and got to get some steering rack gaiters for starters......will prob be more when ive looked properly! Steve
