Tonight's good use...Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. I remembered a very obscure bit of HHGTTG (lintilla) earlier on, then went googling and found all four series of the radio play AND the infocomm DOS game for download. I literally haven't heard this in 30 years (and the eeePC speakers are rather reminiscent of my old transistor radio too) Can anyone do me a vinyl cut that says "Don't Panic!" for the lid? ;D Paint it? I painted it on the back of my crash helmet when i was 17 and used to ride 125's. No comment on your thread as i don't understand a word of it ;D

Text based adventure games... Found a javascript port because the download one doesn't exist any more. I'm going to keep looking for it, the web version has no game save.. I should be able to get it to run in dosbox if I can find it.

Scary, I think I have the DOS version of the hitch-hiker text game kicking about on my hard drive somewhere. Let me look.
EDIT: Found it. I also have a walk-through (not quite accurate, IIRC) and a set of basic instructions, along with a map.
I don't know if it runs (it doesn't work in WINE, but it doesn't work properly in modern windows anyway) but it should do. Depends on whether it survived the transfer (via floppy disk) from my parent's old computer.
If you want me to email it to you, PM me an address.
EDIT2:
Runs fine in Dosbox! If anyone else wants it, let me know.

lol, I just emulated an apple II for nothing then! Dosbox I have got, the DOS version of the game keeps getting pulled off the net, but the apple version doesnt, so I now have a blue screen of life! There are several apple-unix/linux emulators, I found that this one compiles and runs properly unlike all the others (including apple2 in the package manager.. it's hopelessly old and expects you to be emullating on a 486...) needs a ROM image but you can download one from here if you absolutely promise you do own a real appleII but can't be bothered to go in the loft for it. (you want the file appleiigs_rom01.zip, rename it to ROM.01 and put it in the same folder as the emulator, simples ;D ) The emulator mounts the disk image I found earlier as a 5 1/4 floppy drive, the only hard bit was remembering how to boot from floppy on an appleII (ctrl-COMMAND-esc to system menu, menu =>slots set start slot to 6. Ctrl/Break to reboot) Loads more classic games on the web too! try here

actually would be good to have anyway. that way I can emulate both side by side and run benchmark tests on em, lol Wow... Oh.... lol better figure the controls out then ;D and at least at 140K each the games don't take up much space

I found an online version of the HHGttG game about 4-5 years ago. Never got out of the front garden...

Have to say this thread has inspired me. Have taken my old Dell laptop that was slow as **** with XP on and installed Ubuntu and it now roars along! Able to stream movies wirelessly from desktop PC with no judder.
Always wanted to try a Linux but never got around to it. Used a app to install a bootable version of Ubuntu on a USB key, then booted the laptop off that to check everything worked. Then swapped the HD from the 40Gig XP installed to a blank 6Gig one and installed on that. Within about 5 minutes I had it up and installed, new wireless drivers working, new codecs for DivX and the media streaming working from the XP desktop. Oddly it was easier to get this Ubuntu laptop to talk to the XP desktop than it was another XP laptop?!
Next step is to do the same with an old desktop, strip it down to basics and install a HDMI graphics cards and use it as a media center for the telly in the front room. There's version of Linux that take as little as 40Mb, but Ubuntu seems easiest to use and even on a 4GB hard drive I have ample spare for messing about.
I now get the Sudo command in the comic on the previous page too!

Good call Montythemole! Ubuntu rocks IMHO, it's the only Linux I've managed to stick with (having barely any "command line" knowledge myself) AND do pretty much everything I needed it to. I've also been kind of inspired and am typing this on an eeePC, albeit a Windows 7 one ATM. Just need to figure out what the HD partitions are to get Ubuntu on it too. After I've sussed why the intermittent "BOOTMGR is corrupt. System can not boot" message keeps appearing. Thanks Microsoft. SOC - nice to see you're doing proper retro stuff with the little machine!

Boy, do apple games get boring quick! (except HHGTTG, of course.. I've got as far as the bridge of Heart of Gold....) I was getting in an all nostalgic mood and almost got an amiga ready to play cannon fodder and superfrog for a bit, but a/ I can't find a powerpack and b/ I have a kickstart ROM image so I can try out uae - the Universal Amiga Emulator. A600HD model circa 1991 2mb ram, 40mb hard drive, 16mhz 68000 processor. If you want an image of its kickstart ROM, PM me UAE emulator running on the rom image. Next job is to mount up the 2 1/2" I'd drive from inside said A600 to my desktop PC, mount it up and transfer some software to the eee using the LAN (network)

Always liked Commodores. I think the Plus 4 is the best looking computer ever. In a sort of Blakes 7 stylee. Mine got the black screen disease. Ive got a 1200 thats got a HD, but the disc drive seems to be duff. The man had upgraded the roms, as other ones came in a box. Has a big metal box with a modded PC power supply in it. Also got a 600. Was my first amiga. Used to get the Amiga mags. None of the cover discs worked on a standard A600. Had to have a fast A1200 for anything to work.

Me, I did the Amiga thing too. My 1200 was one of the first in the country, has a comically low serial number. Haven't used it in years. Happy days!

Ive seen people modding old computers to take a modern PC board. Was looking at a rubber key ZX Spectrum the other day, that had a tiny PC board in it. Would like to do the same with a Plus 4.
Or maybe an A600. Would make a change from all the A1200s that get put in Tower cases

lol, good to see the linux fans crawling out of the woodwork! ;D Stand up and be counted, you have nothing to lose but your EULA* (end user licence agreement) Seriously, I just read the anti-virus thread (now locked) on the general board and it reminded me (because I have no antivirus, and have never had to de-frag a hard drive, ever) *which if you read it carefully states that it's Microsoft's software and you are just leasing it off them
