Well, I suppose you can guess which OS I'd recommend for your project GNU/Linux gives you as much control as you want, up to the level of actually re-writing it yourself if you feel the need. Downside is the learning curve, which some find a bit steep.. it all looks so daunting when you are used to "point and click" GUI interfaces, but at the same time much more flexible. Shell scripting for example.. It looks and sounds complicated, but at the end of it all it is much like writing BASIC on something ancient and '80s, and it means you can make the computer do what YOU want it to. Your USB remote, for example.. not hard to have a script that reads the remote codes, translates them, and controls music/multimedia apps (even ones that don't have native IR support.. as long as it has a control socket..) Good luck! If you persevere you will learn a lot (and being *very* computer literate is a good job skill) and all your mates will think you are some sort of haxorz god first time they see a terminal running on your PC. Anyway.. I'd better get back to my scripting. Tango GPS records it's date/time like this 2010-04-30T17:22:38Z (Formatted, and converted to zulu time (GMT) and motion saves it like this 01-20100430182238-02 (unformatted british summer time Ist number is the camera number, last number is the frame number) I sed it would be easy but its being awkward lol...

mm, I'd only be using something as old as 7.04 if I had specific problems getting the hardware to run a newer version. I'd go get 9.10 and use that, or you will spend forever getting the wireless to work (and a load of other stuff will be a pita too).

I just realized something important, and don't have anywhere else to write it down (and I have to go to work and may forget)
Because I have recorded velocity and time, I can calculate acceleration (a=deltaV/t) so, seeing as I know the mass of my car Newton's second law (F=M/a) can be applied as well, giving me power readings without a rolling road ;D

you could release all you've done as some sort of car program suite, could be the start of something big. I sed it would be easy but its being awkward lol... oh gawd @rtikyuubi check your laptop will actually work with linux first, I've got one with loads of sis chips that as useful as a brick, as for os's definitely use the latest, ubuntu 10.04 (just out) or 9.10, if you want a quick boot time try one that boots off a usb memory stick like puppy linux or maybe the up coming lubuntu, which being based on the very popular debian, means you could probably find any amount of pre-compiled software to do just about anything.

Ive made an unbuntu 10.04 cd to install it onto my laptop but I'm having problems. I can boot from the cd and get to the menu page where you can select to install unbuntu 10.04. I click install and it comes up with an unbuntu logo with 4 dots underneath that flash red. Then a little while later the screen goes black, doesnt turn off, but goes black if you know what I mean.
If you can help it would be much appreciated! ;D
EDIT:
Just tried the cd in my new laptop and it ran fine, guess my old laptop isnt fast enough to run it :/

Ok, look for an ubuntu version with a lighter desktop than gnome.. I use the XFCE versions mostly check around for Xubuntu instead. Also.. I don't tend to upgrade to the absolute latest straight away (I'm using 9.10 now) so other people get all the bugs fixed PS it won't be a speed problem, I've put Ubuntu onto pentium II boards recently.. Lack of memory might be stopping the "whizz bang" graphical installer from working though.

there might be an option for a non graphical install, try that, or try pressing ctrl-alt-f1 to f8 one of those screens should have something of use.

Hi Scary, nice talking to you on Sunday. After our conversation I check to see which version mint I was using but I was up to date with Mint 8 Helena, so I had a look at Ubuntu and Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition was available.
Got the netbook triple booting and still couldn't get my wireless connection to work, althought I have to say that it is very easy to sort out mobile broadband dongles on it.
Turns out I didn't have the drivers installed for my wireless, ralink 3090, managed that and I'm now up and running - result and now a full time Linux convert instead of just a live CD user when I need to.
Oh, and just checked and Mint 9 Isadora was released yesterday as beta but think I'll wait until the full release is out.
Rob.

Just installed xubuntu 9.10 and is working well so far Just installing 210 updates (LOL) and then I'm gonna install a program called LIRC: help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallLirc/HardyI'm most likely going to have an unlisted remote but I cant make heads or tails of how to make my own file thingy-ma-bob so any help would be a god send

^^ lol, I've got LIRC installed on the desktop PC.. Haven't played with it yet so I can't comment on how to set it up! If I do though, it will go in here, but usually there are plenty of wikis and forums for linux, might be worth an ask after googling for similar answers (you think people get fussy here about reposts?.... lolz) Anyway, my news..... I successfully wrote a shell script to make tango and motion play together properly, then I tried it, didn't like it and threw it away again. Tango is the problem.. it is sampling the GPS slightly more* than once a second, at one second time resolution. This means I get some fields with the same time stamp I've decided that the easiest way is to roll my own, so I'm writing a prog that will poll the GPS, parse, filter and convert the output, take a photo then overlay it, and save the pic and the log, then repeat until stopped. *edited for clarity - it is sampling every .98 seconds, and putting the timestamp on to the nearest second, so every 50 results is a duplicate timestamp and the accuracy of the timestamp varies too. I'm going to stamp the date to milliseconds instead second edit.. try nanosecond ;D date --rfc-3339=ns is all you need third edit, gpspipe reads the GPS from the terminal, streamer does pictures on command... actually, this won't take long to do

When I come to record my keystrokes it 1/2 the buttons like close still work and close the terminal!

haha, wierd? do you already have a lircd.conf file and lirc running while doing the config? try renaming the old config (to something like lircd.conf.old and do a killall and restart on lirc, try again.. I have no sympathy at all, by the way. I'm learning to write python this evening because I can't get the shell interpreter to do what I want it to with the GPS. gpspipe is not nice to play with it outputs raw GPS data, not interpreted variables (which would be nice..) and has a few other nasty tricks to it as well. So, I'm writing a client app for GPSD instead, and if I'm going that far I might as well include it all in one program. (and I *really* cant be arsed with writing it in C...)

After trying to make some form of sense from this thread I am convinced SOC is building a device capable of bending time through which all manner of old vehicles can be transported to the present for all to enjoy.

Nope I havnt got a config file yet. And you need Lirc to be running for the irrecord to run. Its odd that the some of the remote functions (like the mouse, left and right buttons) work with a few other buttons working aswell. hmmm, need to look into it more
