4 foot x 10 inch pipe.... Aluminium or yellow gas pipe....
I am looking to buy about 4 foot of Ally pipe, or even part of an old ships mast to use as a reservoir under the floor of the caravan I am building to go with the bus next year.
Any ideas where to start looking ?
Been on Ebay.
Thanks for the pointers.

Try a ducting company. Mate used to work for a place called gt fans, long gone i'm afraid but big ducting may be just what you need?

Reservoir, ew....... Anything wrong about using plastic sewage pipe. Light. Cheap. Easy to work with. If it's sewage we a-be talking about.....! Or are you making a hide-y spot for all those Krugerrands? ;D

The large dia yellow gas pipe is actually white with yellow cover. I know because last year we scrounged a length from the people uprating the local gas mains for making a apple press (for homemade cider) ;D I'd therefore check council notices for where road works etc and have a word with the workmen for an offcut. Other than that ring Transco and see if they have a local depot where you can root in the rubbish skip in exchange for a few packs of biscuits for the staff room. Is this for fresh water, waste waste, air or whatever ?

Norm, sewerage pipe is plan "B" , but only 100mm, so one would need to link the two lengths to get a decent reservoir size. Will be fro fresh water, and needs a pickup plumbed in, as well as a filler neck, ideally situated somewhere safe and out the way.

there was a load of new yellow gas pipe left in bushes near me. it was put there in winter, and they must have forgotten about it . as it was overgrown by the time they started the job in summer . so they shipped more in. i,ll take a look to see if its still there. as it should be uncovering again, now winters on us again.

you never thought of useing few lenths of drain pipe spread across the chassis evenly could also be used to lower centre of gravity for towing n help keep it stable.

you never thought of useing few lenths of drain pipe spread across the chassis evenly could also be used to lower centre of gravity for towing n help keep it stable. That is plan "B" Syd, but means joins, and also plastic, which makes it slightly more fragile due to the position, also the ighttest option. Gasbottle is a good idea, but a bit thick / wide. I was thinking of ally or stainless pipe with a diameter up to 12 inches, then put it in a massive press, till it is oval shaped, weld ina couple of baffle plates, and then the top and bottom end, and Hey Pesto !! Watertank to hide below the deck, and also help with balance to get more weight to the rear. Would gaspipe be "safe" to use for drinking water storage ?? You often hear about chemicals etc seeping out of certain materials over time. Oh, and I do have a coded welder on call ;D ;D ;D

Yeah, gas has sulphur in it to make it stink - This can leech into the metal. Not quite the same, but I know of people who have cut calor gas bottles open, and months later they still stink, even after washing them out, making fires in them and everything!

I don't think aluminium would be a particularly good material for a fresh water tank. Can you not find a suitable ex-caravan tank?

Stainless or poly-pro are really the only materials suitable for holding water. Aluminium or other ferous materials will lead to a whole host of corrosion/contamination problems/ A simple stainless barrel tank would be easy enough to make up

what about a new old stock petrol tank (so it hasn't been used lol)? I know you can get plastic ones and some funky shapes etc and they're often wide and flat for spreading the weight. Or alternatively an alloy fuel tank !? + edit: aah didn't think about the corrosion

Hmm.. what about a couple of old expired water fire extinguishers with bases cut off and welded together ? I understand they come with a plastic internal lining... which might cause problems if not removed before welding... but could you not weld then seal the inside with some of that paint stuff that Oldbus used when he was doing his petrol tank on the van many moons ago ??
Plus I understand (from second hand sources) that the extinguishers are just binned when they have reached the end of their life... so may well be able to pick up a couple free ??
Hmm... just spoken to FPS based in Gravesend.. and they say in general the old non-serviceable extinguishers are picked up by scrap metal merchants due to their weight... If it's something worth thinking about I'll have a word with the guys at work when they come in to do their next service for ya.

The tank/container will be removable right?.. if so, what about using what the hell you want as a 'case', and use one of those poly-bag type water containers inside it?

Have a look at homebrew polypins. 10 or 20 litre capacity. Could even buy beer filled ones and drink them before you travel.
