I did a season in my Minor and found it great fun.
Cost: Its all relative, but £65 to £90 entry fee to an event for a minimum of 4 runs possibly lasting under 40 secs each. But I treat it as a day out and a way to push my vehicle hard and tweak the suspension.
Once you know a track it is surprisingly difficult to knock even 0.5 of a second off your time.
Try the Midland Speed website. Other hillclimbs within reasonable distance from London are Prescott, Shelsley Walsh and Loton Park. I often drove 100 miles to an event, competed and drove home (no trailers here!)
Other things you will need are a RACMSA competition license (Speed B I think), a fire proof suit and a crash hat.

thanks I'm learning lots from the hsa/aldon website too... looking at sprinting too, that looks just as much fun....one of my friends who is doing the aircooled cup (old beetlecup) wants to come too and one of the vwdrc wants to join me .....meaning two fastbacks at an event, way cool. licence and clothing the same as the 'drc regs that I'm already used too, cool.

Used to do it as an excuse for a good day out (not competitive) in my MGB GT (and once in my Toyota) in the late 90's but it was only about £5 to £15. In the space of about 6 months it went up to £90! Needless to say I stopped and disposed with my competition licence after a few years of building up. I don't know who exactly to blame for price increase ? Did the 'proffesional' want to keep the 'riff raff out' (i.e. me) who just wanted a nice day out and thus taking time up for them when they could have been doing more runs? ...Or was it the fact that the RAC Motorsports division 'sold -out' in 1998 and was bought out by the French racing body (forget name) and inturn costs were cheekily put up! Either way there was a lot of us who stopped in the late 90's. Plus noticed towards the end they were getting funny with scrutineering (e.g. theres rust on your door sir!!? ...SO!) I know you need safety but it was getting a bit silly (when I first did it they didn't demand a crash helmet...well not officially ;D or 'flame retardant' overalls = more cost etc.). I had a happy time but due to costs now involved I will never ever do it again .

Yeah, I like your Peugeot too, 104ZS. ;D Ed, I hope to compete in next season's Aldon HSA events. I had thought not to join the championship next season but just try a few events, see how the car goes, etc. I am a motorsport novice! I've still got to get my overalls, helmet, license, etc. Maybe see you out there! I'm

One of the best ways to experience hill climbing without all the hassle of license, scutineering etc is to go on one of the driver lesson days. I did Harewood ,cost around £150, but got excellent instruction and over 10 runs up the hill, which is value for money when each run takes around 70 secs (if you are good!)
I think most venues run them.

Hillclimbing is probably the most friendly motorsport around.
Once i was at Gurston Down and there were two porsches. They werent together but they were next to eachother. I over heard them talking and it turned out they were sharing a set of slicks because the one guy had a set that were to hard and he couldnt get any heat into them. They had only met the day before, and they were competing against eachother.

I'm actually thinking of going Hillclimbing in something silly! AE86? Mk 1 MR2? Silvia?
The scrappers just up the road has an 1800 Turbo Silvia with Tax and Test for £150 at the moment...
