A small update this time around but it is progress. Firstly the other side of the suspension is now all done too! Brakes et al. are now all back on the car. The remaining bits left to do on the front of the car include: - Braided pies (will be done when the rear beam mounts/pipes are put on)
- Engine mounts
- Mintex M1144 pads (caliper needs cleaning up I think (it's binding a little on the nearside) and I am debating on if new discs are needed).
The oil filler pipe was also changed too, for which I can thank Lopez on this thread. The pipe had indeed gone but not for the usual reasons. I'll let the pictues do the talking: The splits in the bottom:

Well, when I say back, I mean back on the roads.
As for how is it - WOW is one word. With the suspension on the floor (and with how hard the rear dampers seemed) I was worried that the ride would be uncompromising, but it is is anything but. The ride is stiffer than before, but it is also way more compliant. Where the bumps were previously magnified before, the car now goes over them with ease. The backend is also way more predictable. Whilst it can still be provoked to step out, it's no longer the wallowy and wayward rear end that it once was. Turn is is much improved too (I thought it was good before!).
The engine mounts have make the car a little noisier inside at idle, but it's nice to change gears with things feeling tighter and not like the engine is barely held in.
Whilst the brakes were good before, the feel and stopping power has improved significantly.
Is there a negative? At the moment yes, the tyres. The rears are Dunlops, whist the fronts are a mix of semi legal Budgets. It's great way to do burnouts and to momentarily understeer.
When the tracking is done they will be replaced. The question will be track day tyres or something half decent for the road...
But for the meantime we'll see if I can make it down to the RR Warwickshire and Coventry meet tomorrow.

Nice work! I'm running Toyo Proxes T1-R's in 195/55/R14 on those same rims. I'm really happy with them. They're wearing pretty quickly at the moment but that's not surprising as I've been driving autoslalom a lot lately.

A small update from before. It's been going fine but I have come across a couple of issues. The other day it tried to cut out when driving it, but not quite, but it was quite undrivable. On further inspection I noticed that the LT coil leads were barely on! A sand of the coil terminals, some Vaseline on them, with some switch cleaner sprayed down the connectors and them tensioned up had the rev counter working again (it was wondering all over the place before) and the car running a bit more consistanly. A result indeed. A more worrying one is the oil leak that I thought I fixed. Basically, it's still leaking from the sump plug despite a new sump plug and washer (albeit aftermarket). It's lost about a litre of oil from it when it was stood up. The plug going in was a little 'loose' so I am guessing that the plug has been torqued up too tight in the past or that it's just seen quite a few oil changes. So, I guess I better hunt for another sump with a decent plug. Ho Hum... Otherwise it's still a great car to hoot about in . I've also aquired some road wheels from a CTi.

After a long slumber, it is back. And Lord it is great to get behind the wheel of it. Basically, we drove around with some very old (read 2 or 3 of them 10 years old!) tyres from a CTi to save the R888s. This turned out to be a false economy one night when my friend could not stop when a Polish driver decided to randomly slam his brakes on in the wet. This left us with a slightly bent 205. The bonnet, bumper (could have been reused) and radiator were all fit for scrap. The valance, lights and grille were all salvaged. Oh, my friend left the Lion badge on the side of the road. He was quite gutted he did when he found out I could get one cheaper from the dealership than they fetch on ebay! Either way, with a bit of metal pulling, and reconstructive surgery it is now back. Whilst it was off the road a few other things were tended to, including the iffy wiring in places and breather pipes (replaced with silicon replacements). As a result the car seems to kangaroo alot lets now and run a little smoother. Most of the bits obtained were secondhand bar the front bumper, red strip and bonnet badge. It could be a little straighter (as the keen eyed will point out) although the bumper will be put straight when I next get the chance. But without further ado, here are some pics of the car now. Excuse the poor quality of phone pics: And some of me enjoying the car in the summer just after we did the first spate of mods, when I took it to the Nurburgring: Plans now are to: Change front springs (currently 200lb and 10.5", I have some 160lb in 9" guise, IMO a little more suited for the road, considering the rear torsion bars are stock) Coolant hoses (may go for a full silicon hose kit as some of the tired hoses on there are no longer available new) Paint - I do not plan to go to town, but simply to paint the bonnet from graphite grey to Black in addition to the front valance and new rear valance, so as to smarten up things.

Looking good Chas, shame about the shunt though mines in pieces again, it's been off the road way too bloody long now, I'm getting sick of looking at it

Fear not lucky, mine has also thrown up a little more than I bargained for!
A simple start for changing the cambelt today turned into getting the driveshaft out! Why? The new bottom engine mount it had 10,000 miles ago (and a year or 2 ago) has already completely failed. When I got the Group N engine mounts, I changed the top buffer mount and gearbox mount thinking the new one could be left alone. After today, I realised about how wrong I could be!
So the mount bracket is out and shall be getting a new one pressed into it shortly! Maybe the new mounts put more stress onto the softer mount but I reckon it was down to the bottom mount being a pattern item (after all, both my GTi-6 and 306 DT were/are still on the original mounts with both going over 100,000 miles and the mount is the same item) and hence why a pattern one cost £15 compared to a genuine part costing near £40.
However, at least I can now change the spring easily!
Left to do after I change the pads and springs in the driver's side are: Passenger front spring and pads Cambelt and water pump in additon to replacing a balooned water hose.

No pics this time I am afraid.
Since then, It went to Spa and back with no issues. The cambelt and 'pump were changed, and it did the job well. Bar the brakes fading badly with my friend at the wheel!
When we got back, new pads were on order. Some new discs, and Mintex M1144s later (on a stock setup) and the brakes were transformed. It really does stop with no troubles at all. IMO it would suffice for many 1.6 GTis and keep the unsprung weight down to boot!
However, it still leaks like mental. I think a new sump beckons.

Well, here is my latest arrival shared between me and a few mates: Cool car how does sharing it work I'm sure there may be some arguements and toys thrown from the pram to come It's pretty standard bar a few things: Miles' (PugRacing) Group N Adjustable Gear linkages Air filter/AFM location moved It's also had new bits including new tyres, Lower arms, steering Rack, Front tyres etc.. But it also needs new suspension (dampers are a little tired as are the rear beam mounts, engine mounts and a couple of oil seals attending to. It's a joy to drive and it certainly has that grin factor about it. Being a non sunroof and non electrics (manual windows) model, it also is slightly lighter than a normal GTi so it may be used for the odd hillclimb dependong on the direction we take.

Hmmmm, now that is a tempting proposition! Assuming the sump plug etc. is fine you may well have a deal .
