A few rust repairs have been made, now the MIG is up and running. I am quite happy by how this patch turned out: And I think these are grinded down enough now:

Here's where the rust is significant as ever. It looks bad and is much worse because it goes back and has rusted out some of the subframe and all the small patches around this area. Some of it is rusted to the point where there is missing edges, so it is hard to make even a new template for a repair peice because you have to know where it finishes (If that makes sense). Lots of triangular bits in odd places it would seem. Its like origami. I spent 4 1/4 hours on this today. After a bit of poking around with a screwdriver and weighing up weather or not to try and take the whole quater off to get the rust, I decided that I would cut of bits of the quater panel and then weld them back at the end. The problem is I have to dig back to the rust furthest away, until I can fix it and work out again. There's no use in making the patch on the outside first, and welding it in before fixing the awkward rust at the back. I started by cut a section of rust and making a repair peice, obviously not welding it in yet (I'm holding it upsidedown in the photo!) ............and another peice with that, after a card template I next decided more of the quater panel would have to come out to fix some more rust behind it. ........and look, fresh metal............no, just kidding, more rust I took out the spare wheel pan because it was getting in the way and would have to come out with the floor sooner or later. This lil' bit will need replacing too. It is the part the new peice in the third picture of this post will welded to. This is going to take ages, and I hope I can get it togeether how it was (near enough anyway, because there seems to be soooooo many rusted out bits which drop into your hand and need replacing. This is sure to keep me occupied!

A little more work today on the rot behind the rear quater. I Made some repair peices after cutting out more rust so they could be weldded to sturdy metal, first of which was the new peices for the subframe and takjing it in: To the right of this photo you can see some rot which will need cutting out: Then I made a new parts for the back of the arch. I know the welds on the top aren't so hot (excuse the pun), but they are not finished and the gas ran out, which is why I couldn't continue.

This evening I realised that since about an inch of the arches will need to be cut on either side (to ft around the chassis-37.5 inches across), The subframe rails on the body, which I made that repair peice for, will go with it. So, there was no point in making it. This is annoying, as the last 5 days work have almost been for nothing, except that now there will be less to fix since some bits of the rust will be chopped out when the floor goes. And I can't chop out the floor until the cross bracing I made is welded onto the inner sills. So, I had to get fixing the front of the sills before I could weld in the cross bracing, so they are first on the list. Here's todays poorly taken shots: I cut out the rust, firstly on the outer skin of the inner sills. I had to be careful not to cut into the underneath skin. Then, I cut out some more rust, a smaller section this time, from the second layer. I welded in the smaller peice and then the top peice, making sure it was as flush as possible to the parent surface of the inner sill material. I learned how crucial this is to having a decent finish when ground down when I was doing to the other sill repairs. I then drilled a hole into the new patch on only the outer skin, and then put a tack of weld in the hole when it as clamped against the metal behind. This was like a spot weld and stopped the two peices 'peeling away'. After a little more of tweaking the shape of the third peice I made last week, I held it on with duct tape just to tack it in, then took of the tape, and put a few more tacks in to hold it in place. That is all I have done really. I need to fully weld in the last peice, grind down welds and perhaps cut off the ends so they are all the same and correct length. But this would probably be better to do when I get the bulkhead to see exactly where they needs to be cut. Next job after that is the opposite side sill repair, just like this one. Fun Fun!!!!!

I was thinking ... dangerous at my age ... I bet a tractor grill would look the double titty tits on that if you'll be running without a bonnet.

I was thinking ... dangerous at my age ... I bet a tractor grill would look the double titty tits on that if you'll be running without a bonnet. -Steve I second that and how about some white walled pie crust slicks (or semi-slicks) for the rear? Oh, and yes I am still following the tread. ;D

I have thought the same though, but I decided a car grill on a car was a wiser, safer move Here's my current one now, assembled for the shot:
