I remember having a matchbox toy, yellow with black XR4X4 livery down the side. That was awesome! lol Lol, still got mine ;D And a white one that says XR4x4 on the bottom but clearly has XR4i rear windows ;D There is a rare version of the XR4x4 that uses the 3dr XR4i shell. Ford never marketed it in the UK so LHD only - another interesting Sierra varient that we never got

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

I want another one best car I ever owned ;D ! agree, mine had an LSd rear end and an Efi motor and was brilliant, if i had another one i'd 24v it like a shot, proper 80's motor and so under appreciated its untrue. I wish i'd kept mine. My 4i was drum braked on the back untill it had an XR4x4 rear end shuved up under it, the proper 4i (not the pansy mk2 version) was never offered with ABS as far as i know. All the ABS cars were disc braked on the back and (i think) all UK XR4x4's came with ABS standard, they also got heated screens, heated mirrors and headlamp squirters as standard i believe as they were designed with winter and skiing trips in mind.

Good choice. I have a 2.8 & 2.9. Sorely tempted for another (functioning ) one. Seized rear calipers are common.

My XR4i has discs on the back too. Is it a mk1 or mk2, the mk2 was more of a trim level than a seperate model?

My TurboTechnics Mk1 XR4x4 was the best car I've ever had. Comfy, practical, tractable, fast and handled well. There's plenty you can do to them too, obviously mine had the turbo technics conversion but I also upped the boost, had a large inter-cooler, dump valve and a 4" exhaust system with one silencer. People always commented on the noise it made. I genuinely mistook it for a neighbours camaro when a friend who borrowed it drove it up my road. They handle amazingly well as standard but I also had Koni shocks, Vogtland springs and the Group-B motorsport bushes. That took things up another notch or too in terms of how well the car tightened up and settled. People have fond memories of these cars and can't help but smile and compliment them when they see one. With the turbo mine did 0-60 in 6.7 and a 1/4 in 15.1 secs, you get about the same performance from a 24v conversion. Not lightning fast but combine that with the tractability of the engine size and the handling and they storm a-roads faster than most things in the backing sun or deep snow. Mine drank fuel like crazy, horrified a friend of mine who borrowed it for a while after driving a DB9! Being Sierra based there's lots of cosmetic modifications you can make, for example it's easy to get seat subframe converters to fit bucket recliners or gauge pods which fit in the air vents. People call them the poor mans Audi Quattro and they are right.

Ford even took them rallying but the V6's lack of tuning potential and extra front end weight led them to use the YB powered Cossie 4x4 instead, the XR4x4 is pretty much the same car underneath as the cossie.
