My god! No wonder this hasn't been finished! You cant buy a rotor arm on its own, you have to buy a whole distributor! Which there's 2 of, and they are £350 for the pair! Leads are £250 a set! Exhaust manifold gaskets are £120, inlet is £65. Thats all trade prices as well. Haha. Yeah will put the rad, fuel tank, battery in the front end. Not expecting it to handle, will be a bonus if it does! Yowch! If it was me I'd be going aftermarket ignition I think - MegaJolt or something. No need for any distributors then. I bought some exhaust gasket material in sheet form some time back - I'll be using that as Mercedes V8 prices can be silly sometimes too! I can't imagine the inlet manifold gaskets are anything special either, or are they?

Yeah I'm thinking the same. My mate reckons he can get 2 golf 16v dizzy and ecus running on it. Might give that a go quick.
Fueling, we've got the original loom and ECU, but its got so much curse word on there it'll be a pain to work out, and due to not having the auto box it came with, the ecu might get the hump and go into limp home mode if it works at all, and with the price of the leads dizzys etc, something custom would probably be better off.
Spoke to Bogg brother who reckons they can do me some manifolds for it, could chuck it on bike carbs and get some mappable ignition...
Imagine the noise!!

I saw this for sale, I got excited, I did some sums, I passed on it. However I am looking forward to see someone else finish the thing. Too spendy for me sadly. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Ahhh, my old car Believe it or not, that was built to that stage in a week! me and a friend found an Audi V8 (the car that preceded the A8) in the scrappy and had to buy the engine as it was so cheap, then we had to think of something stupid to do with it, an Audi coupe V6 gearbox turned out to bolt on, and so we had a perfect candidate for mid mounting in something. Keeping it VAG was essential, I had a mk2 polo at the time, so we got the tape measure out, measured from where the floor kicks up to form the rear seat base, to the rear valance, and dammit if the engine wouldn't fit! On top of that, it placed the drive flanges in the middle of the rear arches, so it HAD to be done. Anyway, we took all measurements off my car, built the subframe, mounted the engine on it, and then hit up ebay to find a car to put it in. A suitable coupe S turned up pretty local, so we went and picked that up, gave it the thrashing of a lifetime on the way home, and then chopped a whacking great hole in the back! Anyways, we got it in and cobbled up some suspension of sorts, and towed it to the British Volkswagen festival BVF, parked it up, and wandered off. Seemed to get a good reaction! Anyways, long story short, my friend moved away, and neither of us could afford to finish it, or buy the other out, so we sold it, and it seems to have sat doing nothing since. I'm just glad something is happening to it, if I had time and money, I'd love to be doing it myself, but hey ho! Looks like it is in good hands

A whole bunch of formular ford arms to play with... The "cobbled together" rear suspension... Shiny ally rad for the front, should sit nice and snug. And this is the battle at the moment, so many wires to work out, loads have been discarded, still got quite a few to work out, very tedious.

Wow that is really cool, thats basically what i wanted to do with my saab 96. I couldn't find a cheap enough Audi V8 for my needs.
So got hold of a V6 with vague plans to upgrade to a V8 in the future.
Anyway I cheated and brought a unfinished project 96 that had the same treatment as this but with a classic 900 engine instead.
Actually i need to update my thread as have got my engine fitted now!
Do you have some more photos of the rear suspension? I need to remake the custom top wishbones on the car as they are not going to be strong enough.
Would be good to see how you have done it.
Whats the bhp of your Audi V8 engine?
Will be keeping an eye on this, oh would be really interested on how you do the gear change when you get round to it as I have the same prob with a rod coming out the back of the box.
I was planning on using a MR2 gearchange and cables to the back but am unsure how to link the cables to the rod and get a working gearchange out of it.

Something like this or this is probably what you're looking for. EDIT: The Powertrain/Transaxle forum on GT40S.com - here - is a very good resource for any mid engine builds.

qbe careful if you are using those FF wishbones. they are designed to carry very little weight and not so massive cornering forces so may not be strong enough for a v8 polo good luck with the build, gonna be insane ;D

Why? Seem to get good reviews elsewhere?
Just waiting on some Bentley wiring diagrams to see if we can get the ecu to play ball.
The wishbones are custom made and rose jointed, will be tweeking everything once its running.
Ish, yeah, I sold it last month though, law of the sod haha. 10.5:1 compression ratio though, could run low boost like the twin turbo Merc. See how we get on!
Gear linkage looks good, I'm hoping we can blag a mk4/5 polo conversion as the boxes are rod change but theres a box that sits on the rod which the cables run to, so we'll see!

Would be very interested in seeing a picture of this "box" do you know what types of polos had them? Will have a scout round the scrap yards at some point and see what i can find! Cheers

Which leads us to brakes, if I use mk2 golf front calipers on the rear, how can I get around the handbrake? If you are using hydraulic lines could you use a line lock for a handbrake? isnt the front end going to be a bit underweighted tho? What if the fuel tank and spare wheel were in the front? Would that be enough weight? have you driven a bug ? imagine that with uber power and curse word loads of camber... thats what you would have to do to fatham an impression of what half the torque in this will do.... think some serious things would need doing susp geometry wise... (its taken porsche along time) although being mid mounted rather than rear is should be " better" ish... if the handling isnt what phils looking for.... then making do with the massive amount of torque based fun would be enough in a straight line lol
