last ill say on the matter.., I'm sick of this now.!! this has got well and truely beyond it!! ive stepped back for the last two weeks thinking that I might be one of the people causing the hostility here, but after lurking and watching some threads ive realised thats not so and you all seem to slate eachother fine without many of the people that have been blamed for the problems... its simply impossible now to say anything here without someone getting offended, and trying to make some lil point about it! ive explained what I said in the last page, a comment which maybe I could have wrote a lil better for your strangled mind to understand. I don't know what I could possibly say to have prevented this outcome other than either *NOTHING AT ALL or *OMG LEX YOU SHOULDNT HAVE SCRAPPED IT YOU EVIL EVIL MAN the latter would have been met with its your car to do with what you will stop slating the poor lad... the former would have been stupid and would have betrayed the entire point of a forum. my post however as usual becomes targetted for no apparant reason other than ooooh what can I fish out of this to make a silly comment about... oh look he called it a nothing car... ill change the context of that I therfore stand by my comment of... it , without lex's touch was a car that no one would have taken a second look at! its a golf... somthing you see everyday passing you by on the commute... he was unable to sell it... and then stripped it of his touches making it just that.,.. a everyday, nothing car... what else can you call somthing thats going to be fragged? I could have said it was just a scrapper.... but with 20 pages of build behind it... and a great signiture pic to be proud of it was a great car.... but it mets its demise.... same as everycar will eventually..... does that explain my comment in enough detail to get your mind round it? (*DELETE THIS IF YOU WISH) yes - think that just about covers everything ;D I see where your coming from - look at other threads on the first page today - maybe it s the weather mk2 golf isnt the rarest car on the planet - but after 20 pages of build - its more gutting to see it go to slaughter, than some cars. and, I do get the point from some (including the OP) about storage space / cash / other projects needing attention. I just had to comment, as the decision to scrap seemed an odd one, IMO

This thread has gone way too far now but lets be fair, retrowagen didnt start this (or at very least didnt intend to) and I think some of the people that have posted in this thread need to re-read what theyve put to realise that their comments were perhaps unnecessary. No doubt the mods'll be along soon anyway.

One chapter closes, Another one opens I say. It's sad seeing a car go but only you know how bad it was and only you know when it's time to count your losses and run. I saw a mint J plate Mk 2 Golf for sale near me not long ago, When I say mint and really mean mint as well, It was a 1.6 Driver in bright red and was only up for £495 with a years MOT and it still took two weeks to sell, (funny enough I saw it again last week being driven by a old bloke and it was loaded up with tons of old logs ) but what I'm saying is if a mint one is strugging to sell at £495 then a knackered one must only be worth scrap.

Oh well said to see it go, was shaping up to be a cool car. By circumstances get in the way of cars................
If I had the time, space, money etc I would have never scrapped, sold or got rid of anything lol! And my g/f would have probably removed my balls by now.
Look to the future dude and 25 is rad ;D

Please, don't let this go straightly to hell or the bin now...
Reading between the lines, what Retrowagen said was not that the final result after the work, soul, blood, sweat and tears that Lex put into it, it was still "nothing".
What he meant was probably more like "the base for the project was just an ordinary five door Golf II CL, there's more of those and the project can be done again". And I can agree with that, and I'll be surprised if Lex thinks anything else.
I can understand that one may wonder why putting such effort into a car and then scrapping it, but I think that Lex has the same feelings too. There's simply so, that you can put hours and hours in getting a car looking cool, and it will still be a lemon. I've got some of those cars, the outside may draw attention and people drop their cheeks...and then you have to wrench on it for hours every day just to get to your job the next morning...often, there's no idea to repair those cars, it's cheaper to get a good shell if it is a quite common car like a Mk2 Golf... How cool they even may look.
The faults usually show up after a while - so it is not always as easy as saying "don't start with a lemon"...
I've grown tired of those cars and that's why I finally bought a solid low-mileage benz with few owners.
Lex - I understand that it may feel sad and I have my symphaties for that. And don't listen to the negative comments, I'm pretty sure that you did what felt the best for you. I liked your Golf and it is sad to see it go but I fully understand you! If you miss it too much, you can still get a better Golf, that you probably can do as cool, if not even more!
Also, there has been quite clear for a while now that this Golf were going to the scrapper. I'm sure that if anyone had given him an offer good enough he would have sold it instead - but did anyone do that?

I'd like to point out nothing said here I was offended about, but thanks to those who stuck up for me about the 'bad comments', but really as far as I see it; it was a 'nothing car' which I turned into something worth looking at and talking about, but sadly with this car you could make it look like the buisness but still be a 'nothing car' at heart, and it just didn't work....
Thanks for the interesting replies anyhow.

Thanks for the interesting replies anyhow. And thank you, Lex. For sharing your straightforward opinions. You said it was a nothing car when you started, and was still a nothing car at heart when you ended. Sad to hear that. But that's that. And all the tubthumping around here cannot erase your opinion of your own car. A lesser person would probably take to mass transit, but you are powering forward. Good on you, mate.

Shame to see the old satin blue beige beast go.... ;D And anyway, at least it's more interesting than another moan about the Scrappage Scheme Also: A lesser person would probably take to mass transit, but you are powering forward. Good on you, mate. I think you've hit the nail on the head there. A lesser person would see a cheap base-spec Golf as nothing more than transport - fuel it, drive it, better than taking the bus. Hence, "a nothing car" At least Lex put the work in to make it a little more interesting than that.

sorry to see it go lex, though to be honest i havent even read the build thread! Must have a peek now! I'm amazed some people are so horrified to see you scrap it. As said, its your car anyway. To be honest, i would be far better off if i had scrapped some of my cars in the past instead of pouring further funds into them. The easy decision is to hang on, it takes balls to scrap something you've put time and money in to. Just to illustrate what a few other have said, ive come to a crossroads with my 411 and decided i will not find time to do it, don't have the enthusiasm, and would rather put money into other projects. Its in the for sale board. Ive had loads of interest, but as things stand today, its still on my drive. Now it might well end up on ebay .... but how could people complain if i decided to scrap it? As far as I'm concerned, no-one could. Same applies to this, just its an ever more common car! If people havent bought it from him, and he doesn't want it .... theres only one place its going to end up! Its sad when i come across stories like i did recently tho. A guy i knew came across a bus to break up. It had loads of custom bodywork mods. The vehicle was totally saveable, not really any rust to speak of at all. But the guy ran out of funds and enthusiasm and he didnt want to see someone else finish his project, so decided it had to go

It's sad to see it go to scrap, but when all's said and done it's just an old tin box with 4 wheels. If life got in the way and I had to do it, I'd scrap any of mine, sentimental value or otherwise.
And I'm sure from reading the build thread, that Golf has given Lex many hours of spannering experience that will go into making his future rides even more awesome!

I don't see the logic in picking on an individual, the value of cars is dictated by the community.
We should empathise really.
And I think RetroWagon's comments have been taken the wrong way.

last ill say on the matter.., a comment which maybe I could have wrote a lil better for your strangled mind to understand. does that explain my comment in enough detail to get your mind round it? The difference is that no-one else has had to resort to insults. Nobody on here is stupid, yet you make us all out to be. That explains it all for me - my shock over it was that you had seen it as a valued car, but if not, then that explains why it was an OK decision to scrap it, and I am of the same mindset as you now Funny how our Skoda is going up the scrappy Friday and no one seems to care. I care! What is it?
