Last night at the pub a vague aquaintance approached me. 'You're a mechanic aren't you?' he asked. 'Do you want a car, its free but it doesn't go, I need the space'. So Laydees and gentlemen here it is! Dtunings newest car, the Subaru Legacy! I don't really know much about them, its a 2 litre manual. It has no mot or tax and it doesn't start. It would appear the fuel pump isn't pumping fuel. All the fuses are ok and its getting a spark but there is no smell of fuel if you crank it for ages and the fuel pump doesn't motor when the ignition is switched on. I dunno what I'm going to do with it (other than get it going!) so suggestions are welcome!

Nice car ! Youve done well. Cant get much better load lugger than that. I prefer the shape over the Impreza TBH, more groan up.
The quad cam GT4 engined versions of these are very rapid too.
Well done.

Cheers Rav! I thought about doing it up and selling it but it has the makings of a good tow car, air con, leccy windows and acres of space. Dunno if I could bring myself to part with my beloved 'Rolla though!

They are a good car. I ran a 2.2 for six month last year. Not bad handling, fairly quick and sound good but not very torquey and a bit thirstier than other similar sized moderns. The 2.2 wasnt that much slower than my old Xr4x4 if you hussled it but you had to try harder. Great fun in the snow so keep it for a few month Generally reliable but prone to oil leaks and head gasket problems. Cheap as chips to buy as well.

Had one recently. Bit bland for my liking but great fun to rev - really comes on song at 4000rpm. Steering was hopeless but did 30mpg, regardless of driving. As mentioned - oil leaks are an issue and they're great in snow. Ideal winter smoker!

first things after getting it running are: lower it, decent exhaust because those flat 4s sound cool, some nice wheels, black the back windows out. use it a a nice handy parts hauler, an das others have siad, they're great for grip in snow etc. had one of those and one of the next model, both non turbos like that, both silver estates, prefer the estate shape in those myself.
Or, fit the running gear into the corolla.....

Fit the running gear into the corolla? No chance! Have a Celica GT4 engine just waiting to be dropped in. Problem is, I bought the other engine when the corolla had 150,000 miles on it thinking I may need it soon. Now, as we approach 250,000 I don't think its gonna happen for a while yet! Have bought a fuel pump off ebay, I am not sure about lowering it if I'm going to use it as a tow car though.

If the pump doesn't run for a second when you turn the ignition on it could be as simple as the inertia switch has tripped (if it's got one that is).

IT could be a simple circuit opening relay fault, fuel pump should prime for about 5secs upon turning the ignition on. Might just be a dudd pump, easiest first check is see if the pump has power.

ive got one of these ;D they r great cars, have had quite a few others too..I'm dubious that the fuel pumps gone tho,ive never ever heard of one giving up but theres always a first,I'm willing to bet that its a crank sensor,or theres a small black box mounted on the bulkhead about dead centre when u lift the bonnet, sometimes these go or get dodgy connections....as for oil leaks its 9 times outta 10 the rocker boxes on either side which then drip onto the exhaust manifolds and cause lots of smoke and bad smells but isnt actually that serious,is fairly easy to do tho....

I do like legacies, had a couple over the years. The fuel pump is mounted in the tank, i found you couldn't always hear it when turning the ignition on. I normally check by pulling a fuel pipe in the engine bay and sticking it into a jar/can and trying to crank the engine. You'll soon know if your pump is working. There are 3 fuel pipes by the fuel filter the one going into the filter is the feed from the pump. (the 3rd pipe is a tank breather that goes to the charcole canister by the OSF headlight) If its not pumping fuel, lift the boot carpet on the drivers side just behind the back seats. You'll find a cover held in place with 4 screws. Remove this and you'll find the top of the fuel pump assembly. I'd check for voltage at the wires when first turning the ignition on, and also whilst cranking to see if the pump is dead. If you get voltage the fuel pump is dead. If you don't get voltage you could have a broken/trapped wire in the loom (runs under carpet on drivers side) but thats unlikely as they are well protected. There's also a fuel pump relay, mounted above the fusebox (from memory) But i don't think they are common for dying. You could run a temp power wire to the pump just to check, that should get the car running if its a simple wiring/relay problem. Oh and your best place for help and guidance for it is www.uklegacy.com/forums/

1. I'm extremely jealous as would love a Legacy. 2. This \/ is one of the most succinct, helpful posts I've seen in ages. 10/10 Mantasport, TYVM for being an excellent contributor to RR I do like legacies, had a couple over the years.
