It's not that hard i've already done 6 (catching up on the paperwork with my fleet), i just sent a headed paper off (BS name i made up) describing the engine change and the new and old number, i even signed the paperwork in the same name as the V5 is in and the company name is mine as well, the addy was even my home address and i've not heard a thing to check up on it. DVLA really don't give a stuff who does it they just want written proof for thier ever expanding (and often lost) filing system, as for recipts, get anyone you know to sign some sig or other, don't make the mistake of using the same hanwriting style for both !

How about my S12 and getting a 16v DET ? Capacity is identical, but the replacement engine is 16v and about another 40bhp.

An engine change is an engine change, don't matter if it's the same size or runs backwards and is fueled by flowers and small chewey crocodile sweetys.

my cortina had no engine in it when I bought it. Would a letter to the dvla explaining this and then the letter to certif the new engine be ok?

earlier this year i changed the engine in my scirocco. it was like for like 90hp carb out of another (scrapped) scirocco. i just wrote the replacement engine number on the v5, sent it off, a couple weeks later it came back with the new number on, no questions asked. have the rules changed that recently? or was it ok because it was the same type of engine?

i've been thinking about this recently, as I'm going down the zetec route, which also means up into the next taxband. the overall process will be 1. Engine in. 2. Tell insurance company and cough up even more money. 3. Go to local garage and get them to write a letter confirming engine swap. 4. copy letter and pass to DVLA informing of engine swap. 5. wait god knows how long for them to respond and make me pay more tax. 6. finally the car will be legally on the road, despite being on the road the entire time. now I'm guessing that as soon as my engine goes in I'm not legally allowed to drive until i've told dvla and paid the tax increase, and the car won't ever be going off the road, so how will this work? hopefully they won't sit with their thumbs hiding away for ages as i'll be dying to get the car on the road. although the only blast it'll have is to a garage friendly enough to write a letter for me, and that won't be legal, techincally. bit of a dodgy area that is. What year of car are we talking? Remember most retro cars have a universal tax band, we have a 1.6L Mk3 escort and a 4.2 Daimler on the same price road tax. Unless yours is currently a 1L or less.

this might be best off in the useful threads archive i reckon, outlines what is needed, although i suspect SOC will get tonnes of pms now about engine conversions

Is the process still the same if the vehicle is tax exempt?

So in summary, when you send off the v5c with the new engine details, you also need to send a copy of the reciept for purchase of the engine, and either a reciept for fitting or technical report/confirmation of fitment from a garage.
The reciept should be easy enough to get hold of for buying the engine, but can any local garage/mot station do the technical report/confirmation, or is it only authorised people like SOC who can supply the required paperwork?

Like Bortaf said - they will accept anything (pretty much) so any garage that has headed paper should be able to help, but I thought I'd go the extra mile and double check that I am allowed to inspect

So, if I was to get some headed paper for my double garage I could write a letter to them stating that the engine has been fitted. I'll probably go down my local mot station and ask them if they can do it for me though, keep everything above board and 100% legal, don't really want to get caught up on the wrong side of them in their quest for world domination lol

Yup, that's it exactly. You can provide any paperwork you like, but there is always the possibility they will check up

That's just what I wanted to know, no point risking getting caught if my local can do the paper for me, cheers.
