One of the things that scare me off a Rangie is 'percieved reliabilty' (or rather, the lack of!). Might just be an urban myth though.
The other issue I have with the Rangie is the fact that as it's not really that long out of production, and the new ones don't look that different to the originals, even an old one in nice condition is still (my opinion, obviously) still more of a 'banger/travellerwagon' than a 'classic'. Personal opinion, obviously, and I'm not meaning to offend.
I think the Volvo's are only rated to tow about 1250kg?
Audi? Hmm, not sure they really 'do anything' for me, unless we're talking a really old 100 (1970's), but that would be scene taxed to death.
A W123 (an online search shows only really a 280TE [yes please!] or 300TD 'wagon are man enough), or even a W116/126 saloon (need to look into the weights) might be just the ticket.
Fuel economy isn't too much of an issue - it won't be used as a daily (not that often, anyway!), and I only get about 24mpg out of my TDi Maverick anyway!
Transit? Hmm, not really my cup of tea, and I'm sure SWMBO wouldn't approve!
Granny estate? Maybe...

I agree with the lack of "classicness" about the RR, nice condition 2 doors have that feel about them though, but no diesels available, LPG is always an option I guess, mines not broken down yet, but l have had to spend time making electrical bits work that had packed up. lol

I used to pull an Eldiss Scirroco 17ft van behind an A body Senator back in the day, it ate it, the only trouble was max torque was at about 85mph, It would cruise at this all night, between fuel stops... Don't ever use the mpg feature on the computer, It hit 3mpg, then a row of dashes going up Shap on the M6. Big comfy cruiser, quick and handles well, and a huge boot.

One thing to look at with older cars, Other than 4x4's and vans is u usually get a pretty poor nose weight when it comes to caravans/single axel trailers, So might effect how u load car/caravan, Then u have to make sure if more stuff goes in the car than caravan u don't go over your axel weights. Cause without looking it up I'm guessing a Maverick is good for 1/4 a ton nose weight.
What about a Delica? Not retro/classic as such, but different and very capable towers. 7 seats, or if u don't need 7 seats VERY big boot without looking like a van. IIRC 3 ton to tow and 250kg's on the nose
I'm going to be getting a caravan soon myself to tow with my Saff i got a plated 1150kg's to play with so it'll only be small about 1000kg's I'm thinking. Also I'm only aloud 50kg nose weight. If you're a confident tower forget ya 85% rubbish, it's not law, it's just advised. If i payed any attention to that i'd be limited to about 950kg's with my saff, don't get much for that these days.
For what it's worth that astra towing an astra rig above is gagging for a tug, and without seeing astra tow weights is going to be over weight, well over.

As do Range Rovers, my diesel one is doing about 28mpg overall, compared to my last 2.8 straight six Mercs 18mpg, even brand new the book said it was only supposed to do 22mpg, if you get a Merc i'd definately recomend a manual diesel. :S My 5-speed 230E does 30 MPG, without a trailer of course, so that's what to go for if considering a petrol engine.

Sniper used our Ovlov 240 to pull the old Safari 14foot, 4 berth caravan. The problem he had was me feeling sick when ever he towed the Safari, but it was a heavy old thing (a bit like me I guess)

Next year I'll be using my Astra Now all I need is A TOWBAR TO FIT THE GSI!!!! This offer still applies (it was in response to your wanted ad some time back) " i138.photobucket.com/albums/q256/ifc63/astrabar1.jpgi138.photobucket.com/albums/q256/ifc63/astrabar2.jpgI've got this on my spares car. 1993 1.7TD Astra (That's a Mk3 isn't it?) Seems quite low as the bumper hasn't been cut. Looks a bit rusty but I can jack it up for a better look. Based in Crewe, Cheshire so not a million miles away. Yours for nowt if you come and take it off yourself or £25 if I take it off (sorry but really busy at the moment so time is money etc) If I take it off though you can collect from Chester where I work.# Regards, Ian.
