And there's nothing you can do about it. Except not reply. This topic will probably be on page 10 by this evening. So I suppose there is. Balls! Anyway, I like the way it is the unloved generation, forever in the shadow of all the other Mustangs. They're not fast and I don't mind that one bit. Check out the emissions-strangled power levels! 2.3L I4: 88hp 2.8L V6: 105hp 5.0L V8: 130hp Tremendous. The 2.3 was very slow indeed, but amusingly, you could get the 2.3L as an "MPG Mustang" with a different rear axle ratio for even better economy/worse acceleration. This later became standard on that engine. Handsome cars though, can't deny them that. Nice coupe there from top-quality film "Mr Majestyk". Rather battered notchback example with landau roof. T-bar! Hey this is good, I'd have this one. Cobra II "appearance" package. It isn't any faster. You can get this on the 2.3L 4cyl for added adrenalin. Here's an ad if you're not convinced - note the emphasis on "EPA ratings". I like the chocolate bar seats. Bodystyles. King Cobra. They forced you to have the V8 on this one. Still wasn't very fast. Well I'd be pretty excited. Hey excellent, it's got a "slithering four-speed stick-shift". Yeah, you won't be grinning when that sunroof starts leaking. I like the white-band tyres. In conclusion, I like the Mustang II. They're heavy, slow, but pretty handsome and chintzy. They were also very popular at the time - a reminder that the bulk of drivers aren't bothered about flooring it around everywhere. Like me I suppose. Stay tuned for my next exciting topic, "I like the Chevrolet Celebrity (especially the Eurosport)". Perhaps.

Interesting post Hirst.
I would say that the world would be a poorer place but for guys like you (And me at times)
One day when it is too late, people will discover these cars.
I think the trick is to get one, have a plan for it, and then actually execute said plan, and blow they Nay sayers away.
It may not be a typical Mustang, but hell, its large, American, and as mentioned , Different.

have you seen the prices they are advertised for these days?
I saw one up for like £7500 a while ago.
Its not uncommon to see them up at £3500 now, when you see them.
I see one about Nottingham, it turns my head when I see it.
I've seen these tricked out for autocross work and the like to good effect.
If you lose all the emissions stuff they aren't such bad cars. A healthy 302 and some minor suspension tweaks and you are there.
Looks are gawky, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
When they were £750 for a scruffy V8 one with an MOT they were on my "possible buy" list.
At todays prices? You can get a much nicer car for the same money.
Even if Charlies' Angels did drive them LOL

Hirst, your a perv. Akku, don't encourage him! ;D Are these getting to the point now, where they are so awful they're good? Love for the unloved anyone? Infact, I think you should buy one and roll it bone stock to the gathering next year. Some folks won't even know what it is

Hey interesting point regarding Autocross, they'd probably be quite a good base for that really, they've got rack and pinion steering and you can get some kind of "handling package" I think. I think my big plan would be to have a notchback with a landau roof, full-on comfort-spec with mad seats. Can't stop looking at this one, it's great. I think mine would look like this, but with white-band tyres and plain steels with absent hubcaps. I love the "can't be bothered with hubcaps but I've still got the whitebands" look.

I had a 2.3 notchback painted matt black, it was slooooow but still cool, and in the twighlight, from certain angles it had the look of the original 'stang about it, i bought mine for 100 quid about ten years ago from up the side of someones house where it had been parked for months, sold it on when i discovered just how slow and yet still thirsty it was. good fun for a while though.

I'm with Hirst, I love 'em.
Fatha Franster had one back in the early eighties, pale blue with white leather vinyl seats.
It was the King of Cool on the hard shoulder of the (then) M63 when the nylon timing gear decided to lose it's teeth. Gutted!

Pretty sure AK or some one else did a thread about Mustang II's not too long ago. Never driven one, but I would love to! They look great, so much potential. Lima 2.3 turbo or tune the V8 would se great performance, surely?

Huh? "Heavy" and "Large"? Where are you guys getting your information?
The Ford Mustang II is a Ford Pinto with different sheetmetal.
The first year (1974), the biggest engine on offer was the V6. That year remains the ONLY model year Mustang was offered without a V8 option, from 1964 to the present day!
The Mustang II was no bigger than a Capri, and only marginally heavier. It sold very well indeed, as the world at the time was in the midst of an oil crisis foisted on it by OPEC. Some Mustang II's approached 30MPG-ish, which was well frugal back then.

for £2350 reserve not met I'm wondering if thats still a good buy or not. I'm going with the "not". You can get a good Fox platform Mustang for 'bout half that with a V8. Not pretty cars but dynamically very good potential.
