I know this isn't retro in the slightest, but as i can't sleep, and our local VW forum is down, i thought id start a thread for my Polo on here.
Its the 1.4 16v version, which is pretty much as good as it gets for Polos this shape. It has 100BHP, 'leccy windows, a sunroof, central locking, an immobiliser and even a heated drivers mirror! It was generally very tidy, with just a few minor issues, and well worth the epic round trip to Wisbech to buy it. In the dark. Yes i know I'm a plank
So, starting at the start, here's a couple of shots i took on the way home from buying it, sometime in June last year.
The day after i dug my Cups out of the loft, which were (and still are, probably) destined for the Chevette and bolted them on
A serious stick attack was obviously needed, but a couple of small additions came first
Momo Wheel
Debadged grille
All red rear lights from a 6N2
After waiting what seemed an eternity, my coilovers arrived. I went for the Venom-branded jobbies, made by Spax, as they seemed to have the best specs for the money - lots of height adjustment, and adjustable damping.
First the front got the treatment
Which brought the splitter a bit closer to earth nicely
Then the back
Arty (wonky?) shot
That left it looking pretty sweet from the outside
But the interior was a bit dull, so a quick browse of the for sale sections showed up a set of Ibiza Cupra half leathers. They were snapped up and bolted in
Dead chuffed with that ;D
I mooched around in it like that for a while, but as the rear arches were a little crusty it went into the bodyshop to have them replaced. While it was there i asked them to paint the roof white to match the wheels
It stayed like that for another couple of months, racking up the miles - including a mad trip to London to collect some (more) wheels off our very own JayK
Yep, thats 5 8x13 Compos in there - complete with big-ass BF Goodrich tyres
Some random shots -
I spotted a nifty grille someone on ClubPolo had made, so me and Dad had a go at our own
First attempt ended in disaster when some different types of paint reacted with each other, and in an attempt to save it, nitromores was introduced into the equation. BAD idea!
The second attemt was much more successful
Then another 6N2 item, the GTi splitter, was attached in place of the original
And the rear badges were painted up to match the front
Then in an attempt to collect some scene points i covered the back of the rear view mirror in checkered vinyl ;D
That little lot happened over the course of about 8 months, inbetween sorting out the Escy. And i was well chuffed with it tbh, and thought it would just stay like that.
But, a couple of weeks ago, i kinda splurged, and bought a 'bargain' new set of (second-hand but immaculate) wheels for it - 8x14 Steffan BCWs
But, when i trial fitted one, it looked terrible due to the horrendous arch gap making the wheels look far too small for the car. I was a bit peeved, and a bit confused tbh, as i had always thought they looked awesome on 6Ns, especially after seeing some shots of this -
So after i finished stropping and thought about it, i decided to strip the front collies, then removed the helper springs and cut the bump stops in half. The result?
Before
After
Much better, so i tried them back on and i was much happer with it.
Latest mod was a pair of front fogs
Thats all for now, the wheels will be going to the powdercoaters sometime this month, so if there's any interest ill post up some pics when they're all done and on the car.
Oh yeah, before i go, i have this stashed away
Which i bought to possibly donate all this
Along with the brakes for the Polo, but with so much else on I'm not sure if it will happen.
Any comments welcomed, good or bad.
Laters! Rich.
