Oooh That VW guy is not happy Panel damage does seem to be a recurring theme, though, will have to be very careful to inspect that when we pick it up. Anyone on here had any personal experience with SPL, or indeed is there anyone else who does the same or similar process

Panel damage does seem to be a recurring theme, though, will have to be very careful to inspect that when we pick it up. Not a good reputation to acquire I think a complete detailed photographic record before hand, possibly with a copy given to the company and then a contract signed declaring them as responsible for paying for any repairs. That way even if you fix any damage yourself your time could be covered.

There was a ISO Grifo on Pistonheads ( Readers Car's) that was involved in a unfortunate accident whilst waiting for it's dip. A couple of barrels became dislodged and fell over the Grifo totally destroying the front end............

What about the process applied to that Mercedes 6.3 shell? Is that the same as SPL's do you think or not? The Victor looks great!
Does this mean the BMW is coming home?

Yes that Merc was definitely done at SPL I reckon, and that sure was some rebuild www.m-100.cc/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4531I have another couple of jobs for other people to get out of the way, but just small weekend stuff, I spoke to the shotblaster re the BMW and he is going to get it back to me in the next 2-3 weeks, so that should work out fine.

Those rust remover dips work a treat don't they , make cleaning up complex parts so easy. Did you have much trouble rinsing and drying them out afterwards, especially the drums?

Not sure with the Finneghans stuff, as Gordon did these, but I have used the Bilt Hamber Deox C stuff before and it really could not be easier. Just towel dry or use a hairdryer ( I don't have much other use for it these days ;D ), Stuff I have done before was very heavily rusted, and then once dipped you could even see the original plating was still there underneath, I have seen a couple of articles where people have also used vinegar, also with good results

Bit late responding but re the experience with SPL, I had the minor dipped there. Looks a bit rough when you arrive but they handle all sorts of stuff from personal resto's like ours to million pound le mans winning GT40's (in the tank when I dropped mine off), touring cars, WRC cars etc etc. No problems with mine, all came back just as delivered. I chose to have mine dipped and then took it away bare for welding in the cage etc - BIG mistake. Should have had it e-coated as even though some areas would have been damaged with the subsequent cutting and welding it still woule have been much better than what happened needing me to treat a load of flash rust that formed while we were fitting the cage and repair parts that were needed. Its not cheap, however very glad I did have it dipped as it showed up a few areas that we hadn't spotted needed replacing, but turned into doilies ;D. I now know I have a solid car, which is reassuring. If only I'd had it e coated I would also have a complety rust free car inside and out. Have some pics Being taken away In the queue At the cage builders directly from SPL Victor is looking great by the way and very informative. Keep up the good work.

Brettsri - Yes Gordon is certainly doing a thorough job, this will be one nice car when it is finished. Cliffb75 - Yes we think that it is best to have the shell primer dipped after the acid dip, otherwise as you say, your not sure how good a coverage you will get just by spraying inside Gordon has been busy finishing off the front hub assemblies, and a great job he is doing too Finished front view Finished rear view and a reminder of what he started with

I'd avoid SPL like the plague..
I had an Aston Martin DB6 bodyshell stripped and dipped by them, they lost the door frames it took them a week to find them, by which point we missed our window for collection, we had to wait a month and a half untill we could get up there again by which point they'd charged us £250 for storage.
The job looked shoddy with plenty of parts not given a nice smooth finish but having lumps of the undissolved e-coat material stuck to the steel, i took it home and put it in my nice warm dry workshop (where even bare steel takes months and month to develop flash rust) and after a year it has quite large amounts of rust creeping out on several seams and the e-coat is peeling away, I'm gonna have to strip it myself and derust it again, not what you want after shelling 2k+ on 'the ultimate derusting process' plus they were far from helpfull and fairly unfriendly.
