Loving it. Wish mine progressed that quickly. The wonders of being made redundant mate - I have more time than I know what to do with so progress is quick(ish). OK - only a small update for today! Did a couple of hours on the seat subframes - added some extra box section in for two reasons - 1) safety factor and 2) to make them easier to put together (long story without pics). I got those done (and burn the curse word out of my finger in the process) so gave up after that. However - I did pick up my wheels from storage... hmmm Penta goodness I do wish I had found a set of these for my old merc 190e! they would have looked amazing on that! They do need a DAM good refurb too but for now I have NO idea what colour to go with so they are just gonna go on as is until I have decided - maybe gloss black / matt black, someone suggested gloss white - just to stand out, or the complete opposite end of the spectrum, go for a chrome finish to match the rest of the matt black & chrome look... not sure yet - ideas please! :-)

That is LOVELY! I wish I could afford to drop that in! the 3.6 had nearly 300bhp and more torques than an aircraft carrier which would be ideal in my car compared to the lousy 218bhp it's got/had originally! I do LOVE that engine so much! (my dream car is the e28 M5 which has the 3.5ltr variant of that same engine)... hmmmm last little update for now - got the grilles for the front all primer'ed up in red plastic primer... and they look RATHER good actually! I think the next rat-ish car I do needs to be finished in red oxide primer, lovely colour! Note I added the chrome bits back to the grilles for sh1ts and giggles as I miss the chrome.. but it will be ALL back on the car soooon! When its gets light its time to hit them with more matt black! :-D

HI all - back for another instalment. Didn't get a huge amount done on the e28 today as I was helping a friend with his e30 but heres what we got up to if your interested! First on my agenda on the e28 was to attend to a number of rust holes in the front passengers side door... What a mess - solution - weld some more metal back in! I tried a couple of methods with varying success... The forward most hole I went with a patch on the outside of the door (as the car is not a show car I don't mind it looking a bit 'patched' as the whole idea of the project was to learn about welding... and make a track slag!). This worked pretty well and after grinding back it looked ok. The second hole I slid a plate in the back behind the door skin and welded that in from the outside and then layered up the weld and ground it back - this method gave a pretty good finish following the contour of the door skin nicely. The final set of holes were patched by just welding straight onto the surface and grinding back - this also worked well and shouldn't be visible at all once the paint is on! In the mean time James got to work on the e30... pulling it into lots of pieces to fit the new OBC stalks from the e28 and the new light rings with wiper stoppers. We also had the dials out and James fitted a new dual battery SI board to the dials after decifering the German instructions! After some fettling and buggering about we got two pairs of e28 inner (main beam) light rings with wiper stops onto the smiley lights of the e30. Unfortunately the wiper arms are designed for the combination of smaller and larger lights of the e28 so they don't line up just right yet - need to get the angle between then changed to match that of the original e30 light wipers. In the mean time I got on with the fun task of putting the e28 back together. It looks 1000 times better already! The next stage is to put all the grilles in and remove the masking (which I really should have done ages ago as the tape has started going tacky) and this is the finished result. The back half of the car isn't done yet but the front looks pretty damd good!!! :-D Thats all for the time being - next week should see the bucket seats fitted at last, the harnesses going in and hopefully finishing the paint work! whooooot! Jon

OK - latest progress on the BMW! I managed to spend about 7 hours on the car today and seemed to achieve relatively little for the amount of time but I took quite a few pics so here goes! First job today was to weld up the holes in the rear door on the passenger side and grind it back to make it ready for filler. First holes filled with just weld wire and ground back The rear and "slightly larger" hole was cut back a bit and new metal put in (tacked in place here ready to go) I got it about finished and the filler on just in time for the rain! The fixes are a 'bit' rough and ready but I just need the holes filled to stop them rusting more and there being a hole in the new paint job - they aren't very pretty and I havent sanded them to within an inch of their life... because I cant be arsed, just enough to be smooth for paint - lazy I know... "bothered"! While it rained abit I got into the garage to get on with the seat runners which STILL weren't complete - needed to get the modified handles on for the runner release mech and correct the one I did the other day as the handle was too long and wouldn't fit in the car! haha This is the mech after the first go at the handle was ground off the seat frame in the vice ready to go the new modified stubby handle from the original seats - handy! some sparks, noise and burns (add explitives in with the latter) and we have a handle! all fitted to the brackets and in the car Looks pretty good me thinks! after the rain subsided I got to fillering and sanging back the doors ready for paint - sanded it for ages thinking it doesnt look different at all then realised I should let it dry... might have gone a bit overkill on keying the old paint for primer but at least it wont come off! haha I decided I wouldnt have time at this point to get the masking done and enough coats on to satisfy me so I set to on the task of tidying the car out as I had boxes of parts/tools/bits taken off the car/fluids and body work materials scattered everywhere. SO with a few empty cardboard boxes from Halfords I set to. No photos here cos... well its boring but it took HOURS and I found lots of missing tools which is always nice!! Finally - I decided to take off the rear bumper for paint prep as I had the front. so bumper off I inspected the inevitable rust which wasn't at all as bad as I thought it might be but still bad enough that I had to break some bolts off instead of unbolt them! lol You also wouldn't believe that inside the plastic BMW M-tec kit from the factory resides a complete chrome bumper like you get on the other models. Thats all lovely except these things weight a metric fcuk ton! Heres the pile of what came OUT of the plastic bumper.. The largers bits are a center section and the two corner sections of the bumper. to mount it to the car it needs both corners that screw to the plastic bumper then bolt to the car. the middle section is not actually required at all to mount the bumper. So the middle section was due for the scrap heap until further inspection revealed it to be rust free... and chrome. As its the same as a standard e28 bumper this has second hand value so swiftly went into the car to go home for polishing! In the process it bit me... Looks pathetic I know but it skinned the bloody bit completely and it stung like a sucker (and most annoyingly kept bleeding over stuff.. which is annoying when your trying to clean it! hmmm wonder when my last tetnus jab was....) The last thing I got done was the trim down the corner sections to a) loose the rusty end bits and b) reduce weight. this shows the before and after - quite a lot of metal removed that is completely un needed! Thats it for today - tomorrow is cut short by my medical for my new job in the afternoon so might get the bumpers sanded and the mounts back in the but thats about it - we shall see! peace out!

Not long to go now. You know that the bumper innards are what give you strength in an accident...

Not long to go now. You know that the bumper innards are what give you strength in an accident... Shh It saves an awful lot of weight - and it's only the same as having a de-bumpered car as is the trend with the VW scene. I got the centre section home last night and polished it... OMG its like a mirror!! hehe. Not going to get much more done this week I fear as I have loads of stuff going off however I am heading over to get my brake bias (line lock) valve today - whoop!

Nice E28. Now I want another, doh.. No you don't.. they rust.. A LOT! hehe. OK - progress update! I have been on the phone to Fritz Bits and got some little bits I needed including the chrome headlight rings I am missing and some wheel bolts of all things as they were lost when the original wheels were pinched! In the mean time I have been faffing with little additions! First was the spray up the tow eye covers and fit :-) Then I set to on the passenger side doors... I think looking at these pics that the door strips need to be painted in matt black too. I am also ordering some smoked repeaters as I put the side repeaters back on after this and they look out of place! I then got a bit bored of spraying with tins when my finger went numb... so I put the single most important part back on... ///M badge all the way! Then I got onto the rear bumper: Took about two hours but looks pretty good! I also finished rebuilding the internals of it but not sure if its going to be strong enough so might have to weld in some strengtheners to replace the chrome bumper that came out. its on ebay for £20 already though - so much more than the length of box section that'll go back in! more faffing... indicators and fogs in and tested! I also got the harnesses partially fitted to the original seat mounts - just got to make some holes in the transmission tunnel to get the last two mounts in place but rain cancelled play this afternoon so I went into the loft to hunt for bits and found more than I remembered I had! BONUS.... **can you tell I don't have a gf/wifey - no woman would let you use the lounge as a workshop.. look at the STATE of my carpets! ** Full e28 m30 service bits (filter, thermostat, plugs, leads, dizzy, belts etc). Found my old e30 K&N (now on flebay!!) and also found my pair of these.... That the next stage for the car... 4 pot brembo calipers from an 840i :-D and also found this: new chip for the ecu to push the rev limiter a bit and give some better power hopefully! I also found a curse word load of stereo ISO cables - so if anyone is fitting a new stereo - let me know, I have iso cable sets coming out of my ass atm! Right - if the weather is good tomorrow, I am hoping to get one last play in before holiday!!

Nice to see the progress. Now i know how good the e28's are i'm all the more jealous of M owners. On the caliper thing - what kinda brakes are bolt(ish) on upgrades from other bm's? Any of the big e39 stuff?
Oh also the iso adaptors - i could do with one of those - fed up with no stereo at all.

Looking forward to seeing this finished! Tigran - have a look here, a lot of BMW bolt on options to have! www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Upgrade/Brakes.htm For my red 520i (currently with a broken 2.5 m20) that was at the gathering I was going to fit E34 vented discs and calipers just because thats what I have laying round. I also have m535i trailing arms/discs in the post and I'm looking for a new engine... Tempted to fit an M50 2.5 24v or the big 6.

Any of the big e39 stuff? Oh also the iso adaptors - I could do with one of those - fed up with no stereo at all. You must bear in mind - although this says 'M535i' on the VIN plate, its really just a 535i with nice bits. I am however also jealous of owners of the real deal... the e28 M5 is one of my dream cars... in fact.. this is my office... notice the pride of place poster.... M5 racer - yum (please excuse the HOLE I work in!) Re: ISO cables - send me your address by PM and I will bang one in the post for you. I have a blaupunkt CD player that works ok too if you're interested? Do you want ISO to chocy block, ISO to bullet connectors or ISO to bear wires? OK - next progress on the car. Lots of faffing... with the console - whooot! Welded it in and fitted up all the switch gear... To talk you through, top dial is heater temp, below that fan speed (I kept all this in incase I need to clear the windscreen in damp weather and of course if I need to use her in winter at all) Then we have the air vent controls. Under that I've got three rockers with 'arm' covers... because I can! The first two are actually operational, working different ignition stages, the third is currently dormant but will either be for an aux radiator fan or some other function.. ideas? then next to the rocker switches... START BUTTON... woot! all wired in and working. The two way button is a single remaining window switch for the drivers side (all the other windows are welded up and motors/runners removed!). The dials are out of an audi 80 coupé and show voltage, oil temp and oil pressue but they are only wired for back lights and voltage atm - thats yet another faffing job! However I did get to test the panel - ignition stage one showing a good strong battery, still at nearly 12v! Then we turned the wiring loom into spaghetti and rationalised (read: cut out all the b****cks)... Right - thats all for now - more in a week as I'm working away for a week ... in the mountains above Turin/Monaco.... with a hire car... hmm, this could be interesting me thinks!

Gah wires! Put them away!
On another note i've been nerding up on brake stuff and i am not hell bent on either finding some 8-series 4-pots from somewhere or the frankly massive 345mm e34 m5 brakes. Partly as i'm a barry and want big enough discs to leave hardly any room between the edge of the disc and the 17" wheel.

The loom in the e28 is just mad... totally mad. there's wiring for everything - I even got a loom out of the bonnet for the 'heated washer jets'... bloody Germans! the 8 series 4 pots like mine are really cheap - I paid £40 for that glass black pair! the only issue is the discs aren't cheap!! Might look into them mind you as the fronts are a bit rusty now after the car has sat for ages :S

RIGHT - Finally an update, new job means SLOW progress but Saturday (inbetween the rain) saw some progress! However - first thing is the new car which has been talking up my time.. the ovloV! Just a pic or two of this £500, leather clad, air conditioned, auto box! CD changer and cruise control to boot.... oh yeah.. and a TURBO! :-) ANYWAY, back to the BMW... Finished off fitting the harnesses with the final mounts going in the transmission tunnel Drivers side is looking nearly done!! Brake bias valve is in thanks to phoenixescort for the part! Also got the headlight rings polished Progress and funds were temp. hampered by the daily hack too... dead alternator meant this scene everyday after a quote from citroen for £700... thats right,. no £70... £700 for a new one... jokers! After a week of searching a finally found one for £50 delivered.. thank god - no more daily cahrging to get to work and back! Progress on the passenger side rear quarter: then on to the drivers side... and some more german metal... aka SWISS cheese! finished off some bits on the front end too and its looking pretty mean! next stop was to strip down the boot and then paint her up again... so out with old faithful... the belt sander... Unfortunately I didn't detail the progress that well so I shall explain that we sanded it all back, got the primer on, half of the first layer of black and... the heavens open and it rained like I've not seen for ages... great! Luckily what we had done was dry enough to not be affected so we sprayed up the wing mirrors and rear lights in matt black to match while the car dried off then went back and finished off and got everything back on... Right, NEARLY there but thats about all for now... in the mean time.. I put THIS up for consideration.... Jon - out
