Manufacturers build some 5-10% optimism into most speedometers to give you an added safety margin. Generally speaking the only vehicles with truly accurate speedos are ones with calibrated instruments. Meaning Police cars, and HGV's.
895cc of throbbing VW power in a Mk1 Poolo would need a runway the size of Edwards Air Force Base to get to a true 100mph.....and about 100 miles to stop afterwards. ;D
I had an '89 1043cc Mk2 that couldn't even get out of it's own way, never mind anyone else's.

I once had a 1.0 Fiat Uno, according to the speedo it would do 115mph! just shows how wrong the speedo can be.

off course it's possible..
formula V is just a 1300cc polo engine but if you see how fast they go, you wouldn't believe that..
codeword is revs.. remove the limiter and weigh and polish all parts carefully..

wasnt yours a 4 speed? my old 4 speed topped out at 110.... back in my thrashing cars youth days lol to say it topped out is wrong tho.. it just went flat and sat at 110 lol sorta like a bug... full speed is cruising speed idea haha.... Mine was a 5spd but not a 4+E. That was 100mph on the satnav, running slightly oversize tyres (175/65 13s) it was pretty much right on the speedo. It wasnt bumping off the limiter, it just didnt have the power to go any faster! 85 was the realistic top speed though, if I put my foot flat to the floor on an ordinary road that's the point where acceleration became negligable. mines a 5 speed too not the 4+e... I think the amount of people that assume it wont do 100 or will struggle to do it havnt driven a looked after one... or have probably driven one with the usual leaky carb base or other common faults... none of which mine has as its all been recently serviced.. on another note. I'm not going to get into the whole , it can , no it cant debate and weather my speedo in the mk2 is calibrated along with the other two cars ive had that have done the same.. as I know a 1043 can. weather or not my mk1 can is a different matter

The Berg cup polos are proof you can make a tough little race engine out of the old 8 valve (although some are 16v) so I think with a good build with the right parts and the right gearing you could have a competitive car This thread needs pics!
