As Dave just said - WTF!!!! That HAS to be challenged one way or another - trading standards etc..... mentioned.
Can i just add - I've been ripped off a couple of times when younger and naive - but have found that I do get a better deal and much friendlier service on the whole from the small independent boys. 'Cos our cash really does matter to them.
Any self-employed garage boys - hats off to yer, I couldn't put up with the 'other side' of the business with those whinging miserable b*stards you have to deal with on occassion too.

I wudnt have done that I'm a really easy going guy until sum jumped up moron thinks he can charge my bird 400quid for less than an hours work , I wud have said "I think you should reconsider the amount, or be beaten to death!!!" the funniest part weren't that a chap from thrapston garage where the car came from lives on the same road the thermy has just gone and my bird panicked cried etc, so he thought he was being helpful by putting cold water in an overheated engine AND revving the nuts off it to "get the air out" now correct me if I'm wrong overheat engine rectify problem come back to it tommorow when it's cooled down???

:)Just a quick add up of approximate prices...£15 at the outside for a stat and antifreeze, a maximum of an hours labour [at say £40] including diagnosis, the job itself and a roadtest. So that's £15 + £40 = £55 + VAT = £63.25 [roughly] Unless there's more to the job than you're telling us I would get back to the garage and ask some very demanding questions! Stuff like this really annoys me because it makes people like me that are trying to make an honest living look like crooks. Most of this thread has involved slagging off garages...makes me feel about as popular as a traffic warden!

I have been fairly lucky with cars and repairs, but my dad and my father in law have recommended places that have done mots and the odd bit of work properly. I always check the work tho, I get some dirty looks at kwikfit when tyres are changed and I am there under the car checking after but I must admit I don't trust anyone.
I only had one bad experience with a garage that wanted £450.00 for the work needed to pass the mot on my first car a micra. Said curse word to that and did it all myself and then took it back. They took it for a retest and then made up some more stuff that suddenly needed doing. tyre excessively worn when the car had moved a few miles between tests. They only wanted £120.00 for the retest so just paid it to get the car back.
Had multitude of problems with that car.

I thought on a retest, they couldnt fail it again on things that were ok in the first test

I might as well add my little tale of woe...swmbo has a Galaxy and being relatively new (3yo when we got it) she insisted on using the local Ford main dealer for the services (it is close to her work, so sort of makes sense). Even so, I used to feel pretty p!ssed off at the prices they'd charge. I finally won the arguement after she collected it from a service and was told of an 'advisory' that all four disks and pads needed changing and the car was dangerous to drive (no pressure on a woman and no playing to the kiddie seats in the back!!)...at £250 per corner!!! Apparently she had a few choice words with the "Service Manager", as THREE days before I'd changed the entire set (for about £200 in parts). So in 30 miles they went from brand new to dangerously worn out?!!? We now get all our work done at MJ Whites in Wareham - top bloke - and always busy with repeat business, which is always a good sign

Hey Dave - as I said - I tend to find it's the major operators that take the biscuit...... and you know we'd all trust you I've seen some shocking customer behaviour in my time too - so can understand the anger some must feel dealing with 'em. I'll do whatever I possibly can on mine - then stand and watch/learn on anything I farm out. Found that the smaller operators are only too willing to have you learning as they do. Give excellent advice and have already learned the pitfalls/shortcuts. This place has saved me a small fortune too with the advice and others experience having me getting stuck in with new stuff (mostly electrickery TBH).

Allbeit not by a car place but i'm being ripped off as we speak. I bought some wishbones from a forum member (not this forum, a 205 related forum) and they turned out to have knackered balljoints in them. I asked for my money back and he refuses to refund me what i paid .

In hindsight it would have been better to fork out but i lack the ability to see in to the future.

This isnt aimed at anyone here but TBH i get really fed up with garage bashing,i've been in the trade for 20 years now,and i've been ripped off a few times myself along the way but to the casual observer this thread could really give out the wrong message. have you ever wondered why we are so cynical and unhelpful? its cos we are sick and tired of punters trying to rip us off,so when a genuine problem occurs (as in this post) we don't really want to know. this month my garage has been blamed for scratching a car (two WEEKS after we delivered it back) causing a puncture(3 days after in was trailered back) and a flat battery ,despite the car not have even completed ONE mile since christmas.we currently have a customer slagging us off on various forums cos we wouldnt give him a new gearbox, despite the car being a year out of warranty and a distinct lack of service history, and another customer who has trailered his car to 4 different garages because he thought our 'worst case' quote a little high.any money he could have saved is out the window long ago. sorry if this sounds like a rant but it is,there are still honest garages out there doing good work,so please don't tar us all with the same brush. oh and i did get the last laugh a while ago,a customer thought our quote for new brakes too high so took his car elsewhere,on the way he crashed cos his brakes didnt work, the police are currently charging him with, driving without due care and attention, driving whilst using a mobile, speeding, and driving an unsafe vehicle ,his car is a write off and the insurance co. are threatening not to pay out due to 'undeclared' modifications.all this for £20.00

Not buy a garage but I got stitched up buying a car. It came with 6 months tax and was advertised as such. All well and good, except a few weeks later I get a letter through saying the payment for the tax had bounced so I had to pay for it before it became void and the car unlicensed. Turned out the seller had cancelled the cheque as I drove off!
Took him to the small claims court, won, but he never paid up. The little curse word still posts on the local forum and sells openly. Informed the mods but they didn't care and threatened to ban me if I posted about it!
