Hi all, Having done the festival thing again this year, and moved for the 5th time in six years (eek) my thoughts turn again to the idea of buying a retro van. It's got to be big enough for a bit of moving but also cool enough to park up at Glastonbury each year. And it goes without saying that it'll need to be able to dropped... A VW panel van seems well outside any budget I could scrape together which is a shame so I start wondering what else fits the criteria. Having always enjoyed driving modern Transits I wondered what the original would be like to own? My Google Fu is weak today when searching for some inspiration so post anything interesting! Oh, and any other ideas on what to look out for instead would be cool too! Cheers, Steve.

i wouldnt bank on a clean mk1 being much cheaper than a VW, they are way scarcer now. is that second pic a mk2? I love that shape... for some reason in blue...... mk1, just a LWB one, mk2's look pretty much the same other than the front end anyway though.

I do have a very large soft spot for the Ford Transit, The Mk 1 was a great van and very sexy IMHO. My dad had a 1984 Mk 2 1.6 petrol Transit years ago which sadly rusted away in the end. Fredtransit would be the best person to ask as she has a few and is pretty anoraky when it comes to them!. I saw this Mk 1 Camper for sale a coupe of weeks ago, It was up for £3750, Gives you an idea on the prices they sell for, Not cheap. Oh and this is a Mk 2, You can tell by the plastic grill.

That Mk2 phase1 has a metal grille trigger mate.... That's a Mk1 LWB twin wheel. Here's a Mk1 landliner, just come up for sale.

I've had a couple of Mk1 transit campers before now and they are really good to drive, particularly ones with a V4 engine, brakes generally poor but can be improved, can also slot in a DI for economy if its a 'bullnose'.
Also had a CF2 and although a bit less fun to drive and a bit dumpy from some angles the one I and felt quite indistructable and robust (could be because it was a twin wheel rear axel model) CF's where used a lot for 70's ambulances which are really cool in my humble opinion!
Have you considered the VW LT?

Transits were used as ambulances, in the 60s, 70s and 80s. It's how a lot of self build campers started life.

Oh, and lowering an old commercial vehicle is not recommended, unless you either go the whole hog and do paint, wheels and interior, and keep it clean and polished at all times, and have every aspect of it spot on at all times, or unless you like being stopped by the plod who think you are overloaded, not to mention look forward to none too pleasant roadside meetings with our friends from VOSA.....

There are loads of old-school J-Tin if you fancy it. I was in a Toyota Hi-Ace on an F-Plate today and it was awesome!

Never driven one though. I have driven quite a few 2's and 3's and loved how well they drove. Great great vans.

Transits have always been car-like to drive, but thats compared to other vans of the day, i'd say they are better than things like the CF and the Sherpa but after them other vans were as good or better to drive generally as other manufacturers caught up.
