There should be two bolts near the base of the strut, you undo those bolts as well as the three strut top bolts in the engine bay and the use a large bar to press down against the stabiliser bar, you should be able to press it down enough so you can pull the base of the strut by the disc, outward from the car, once that has seperated it should drop down and thusly out.
Compress the springs and remove the strut top by unscrewing the nut atop the strut , once that is undone the strut top will pull of easily and the spring can be removed, the shock itself is an insert that sits inside the strut tube, you may have to use a cold chisel to try remove the old shock/strut fitting, alternatively clamp the nut part in a vice and sping the rest of the strut to undo it, if it hasn't been touched in years it might be a right curse word. Replacement inserts should come with a new nut thing if they don't though, be careful when you're taking the old one out.

Thanks for the advice. I'm tackling it again on Saturday morning. Then I'll be after new lower springs and shocks. Shorter shocks?
I really want to put a set of 15" Toyota Celica Supra wheels on it. Can I find a set? Can I curse word!

The Toyota Soarer and MkII Supra L-type alloys come in a 15x6" wussy offset. datsfun; it was only the P-type MkII Supra that came with 14x7's and that was to fill the flares that those ones came with.

Those wheels are fantastic. Polished and cleaned up they look really good. Are they PCD 114? And does anybody know what the offset actually is? I guess it'll come down to trial and error. If any Toyota Supra wheel owners find themselves in Surbiton and fancy coming over to let me try one of their wheels on my car in exchange for a cup of tea and a J car whittering session... ;-)

If any Toyota Supra wheel owners find themselves in Surbiton and fancy coming over to let me try one of their wheels on my car in exchange for a cup of tea and a J car whittering session... ;-) Charlie The PCD is 114 and the offset is either 8 or 10 +ve on the 14" wheels, so they will defo fit the 910 ;D I don't know what the offset of the 15" wheels is, but then I have never seen this design in 15" in all my travels In the pictures, it looks like they have an offset of 25+ Once you have lowered the 910, you can pop round to west london, should you want to trial fit . I have a set but with no tyres on at the moment, but that can be easily arranged. The only hiccup I can foresee is that the centre bore on Factory toyota wheels is 60mm or less, this may cause a slight problem when trying to mount them up front as the bearing caps on some Datsuns is > 60mm. But easily fixed by a machine shop by increasing the centre bore on a lathe etc for a tenner

Today I got the front springs off. Hub, tube and shock/spring all in one. Tomorrow I remove the springs and send them away to get shorter ones manuafctured. I'm loving the 910 JDM style saloon I found below. How do I get that lip on my rear wing? Is the front wheel arch radiused? And I really think I need some Konig Rewinds. Charlie

Those Watanabes are so cool! I found these wheels last night - 15 x 8 Minilites. Imagine them in black with the polished lip. Anyway, back to reality. I'm doing this on a tight tight budget. I'm still looking for the Celica Supra rims in 15" but a set of used black Konig Rewinds or used black minilite-style rims are on the cards too. Thanks Datsfun for the sping info. I phoned both sheffield spring specialists and I'm going the route of remanufacturing. I was quoted £100ish to take a front and rear spring and remake a set of four, 3" lower with the same stiffness. That was Spring Coil (mentioned earlier in this thread). The other outfit - Coil Spring quoted me £75 to take all four springs, heat them up and compress them, re-treat them and paint them. As good as new apparently. I'm going for the remake. Seems cheap, especially as a new set of Datsun 260 springs from a US classic Datsun site retails at $280. Charlie

And I wonder about the availability of those plastic flares that the Japanese tend to go in for. I don't know how tasteful they are. I'm in favour but my wife (who hates the bullet wing mirrors already) says they look like someone's fixed half a laundry basket to the wings.
