Hi all. Can you help me. I got this in the post the other day after running my cars engine as I toped up the rad. they say I can not fix my cars there. so I have a plan and this is were I need your help. I live next door to a Lidl store and to get to it there is a side road thats about 4 foot from my flat. it is a 2 lane road but its only used 1 way to get into the store. so people park there so they can pop in the shops or to the docs over the road. The people that run the flats I live out don't own the road so they can not stop me. I can run a power lead out of my window aswell. before I get my hopes will this plan of mine work. the road has no name and its not on any maps. no lines painted on the road. its not blocking anyone or anything. not the best pic but it is dark out there now. if I am not loud and don't pee anyone off and its only to finish my cars so its not going to be every day all year round. I think it will be ok. please tell be it will be ok

If it has public access you could still find the council or shop owners on your back, your only s'posed to do emergency repairs at the roadside and they may take exception on health and safety grounds.

I have not got to do any big jobs on my car. so no welding or even jacking the car up.

surely topping up the rad or checking the oil level or checking/pumping up your tyres isn't classed as car 'repairs' anyway

madness! 20 years ago it was commonplace to service cars at the roadside, now this happens?!

A few weeks back my mate and i were pulling my spears car apart. We had the rear sub frame resting on the gate post in the street while we pulled the diff out of it! The kids in the school next door thought it was great.

U must be able to check fluid levels daily! No one does, But u are entitled too! I'd also argue that as a car enthusiast u perfer your car to warm up before u start any journey. (assume u don't have any modded exhausts) and that they are no louder than standard and pass MOT's. U don't rev the engine u let it idle to reach operating temp. H&S kill joys boil my blood!

tree huggers moaning when they see a bonnet up
id go along with what the others say , tell them you do high miles each week and you check yourtyres , oil and water twice a week , along with weekly washing and windscreen cleaning as required , tell em you wouldnt have a clue how to repair a car if you wanted too

Explain the difference between routine maintenance, ensuring your car is safe and environmentally friendly, and repairs which you only entrust to skilled people.

Man! thats lame!
When they come round ( the official types ) I'd tell them that you were just checking your screenwash and the person that complained has a vendetta against you and has set out to make your life a misery ( don't let them know that you don't know who it is )
I'd really act the victim and make out that you are really struggling to live a peaceful life without having to look over your shoulder whatever you are doing!
On the subject of working on the access road to the supermarket......Hmmmm as a long term plan, thats not the best idea.........do you have mates who have a driveway that you could borrow from time to time?
Or better still, try and find a Retro rides buddy who has the above...they will be a little more understanding!!!

damn thats a tad crapola... id go with the topping fluids up, thats not repairs, its general maintanence to your car which you need to do in order to drive it... show em the owners manual if they get funny. they allways say in that to check at certain times and things...
on working in the road, i know your in a tough situation. but they would proably see you doing that as a slap in the face (whoever complained) and make a point of making your life hell.. these sorta useless people allways do.

I think you'll find its a grumpy neighbour and an overzealous enforcement officer.

FFS. Bloody housing associations... Love the bit about 'not causing nuisance... to those going about their lawful business'. As if Ozzy topping up his rad is somehow illegal... Right - day-job head on... Ozzy, when you meet the HA bods, be firm yet completely reasonable; this doesn't have to get adversarial and it's best avoided anyway. Go with the 'routine topping-up of fluids, no intent to cause any bother' angle. Have someone else available to sit in on the meeting with you (if needed), to be a witness to what is said and maybe take brief notes. As suggested elsewhere, try and do your car work away from your patch, for a while at least. Finally, find out who grassed you and burn them. No, ignore that last bit... ;D

The vast majority of educated environmentally minded people I know and work with appreciate that keeping something running can be the best option. Its the fashionistas that wants "new" and "now" that think like that.

Just tell the man from the council that you are legitimately keeping the fluids topped up on the car, and whoever is complaining is clearly out of their mind. Keep a record of what is said. If you're still told not to, drop all the brake fluid out of your car, drive into something on your way out of where you live, complain of whiplash and sue the council... Might just work...

I'd just be very apologetic, state you werent aware that topping up the water in your washes was classed as repairing a vehicle but you cant understand how that could cause offence, or upset. I'd then invite lots of friends with old, possibly smokey, possibly noisy cars to pop round and spend the day driving up and down the street with signs in their windows saying "You know, things could always be worse"
