BMC did twin-engined versions of Mini Moke for evaulation by Army, don't think project went very far (literally?!).
Think I've got a CCC article about the Scirocco.

Has anyone ever put a front wheel drive engine and gearbox in the middle of the car, longitudinally so that a drive goes to the front and one to the rear? Would make for a nicely balanced 4WD car!
Of course there are the Zcar mini's, two hyabusa engines anyone?

My mate used to go on about doing that sometimes. But he never found any diffs with a 1:1 ratio for the front/rear axles and couldn’t come up with a good solution to keep the power unit central with offset driveshafts (the alternative to having all the engine weight on one side of the vehicle).

It could end up horribly complicated, but could you permanently engage a Volvo 340/Alfa/Porsche 924 type transaxle to give you the 1:1 ratio?

Hmm, I think you would still be scuppered on the diff ratio! that would always be 3 or 4:1.
In fact another mate had a funny dumper truck thing with a mini power unit mounted in the middle and off to one side driving two landrover axles, it was a cool thing but only did about 15mph due the ‘double reduction’ in two sets of differential gears.

And John cooper did an experimantal Mini cooper twiny and nearly killed himself when a rear suspension piece broke and inturn lost control and smashed car up! Interesting. I heard a variation on the story which said that he lost control of the car due to using two turbo engines and therefore it was unpredictable if it would over or understeer. I also heard a woman who witnessed the accident tried to sue for trauma. Don't think the version I heard was very true!

As I understand it the Cooper car was using a mini front subframe at the back with a welded up steering rack to stop the back wheels steering. I thought one of the welds had broken and Mr cooper lost the backend at speed. Id heard the bit about the woman sueing - cheeky cow
