...so we all know we can see if a car is taxed, but do we know if there is any way of finding where it is, legally? I'm aware that there are privacy issues, so I'm expecting a "Sorry Chris, can't be done" which is fine, but I just thought I'd ask. The reason is, I want to know where this is.... ...I sold it a while back to a mate, but when he sold it I simply didn't have the funds to buy it. So off it went. It's still taxed, so I assume it's out there somewhere. I'd like to just give the owners a knock and ask for first refusal if they ever sold it. That's all. Thanks guys. Chris

I guess plodding through the forums is the way to go.

From here1.4 Regulation 27 of the Road Vehicles (Registration and Licensing) Regulations 2002 provides for the release of information from DVLA’s vehicle record to those who can show ‘reasonable cause’ for their request. Full details of Regulation 27 can be found at Annex 1 of the Impact Assessment, which is at Annex A. 1.5 Circumstances that have been judged to meet ‘reasonable cause’ include safety recalls by manufacturers, minor hit and run incidents not warranting a full police investigation, housing associations dealing with abandoned vehicles and insurance companies dealing with accidents and investigating fraud. Requests from private car park enforcement companies also meet the reasonable cause criteria. Landowners would have great difficulty in enforcing their rights if motorists were able to park with impunity on private property. it goes on.. When information is requested manually, a full business résumé must be included with the application, to enable DVLA to confirm that the company is appropriately registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office and Companies House. Supporting evidence must also be provided with each application to show that a parking charge scheme is in operation and the enforcement company is acting on behalf of the landowner. Any applications without the required evidence are rejected. All application forms warn applicants that it is a criminal offence under Section 55 of the Data Protection Act to falsely obtain personal information. Details of section 55 of the Data Protection Act can be found at Annex 2 of the Impact Assessment, which is at Annex A. with a nice stern warning about lying to them and pretending that the car is/was illegally parked, and that's why you need the data or whatever... Also, car parking companies that operate pay parking/enforcement have a direct electronic link to DVLA if they are ATA members. But that's no use to you, unless its dumped in the office car park and you need to trace the owner

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

I rented a long disused derelict lockup garage off my local council a couple of years back; that happened to have a partially disassembled Montego saloon in it.
I got the relevant form, filled it in, explaining my situation briefly in the notes box, and how I was trying to trace the owner before I disposed of the car.
I got a swift response, with the full address of the current keeper on the logbook. I went round to what turned out to be the elderly parents of the owner's house, explained all and everything was fine.
So as far as the DVLA are concerned, provided you make the right noises they'll give out the info no questions asked. The only stumbling block I would see is when the current owners of the car start asking questions and get suspicious if you rock up on their doorstep asking for refusal!
If you do it sensibly with the owners 'I spotted the car on my way to work' etc, and fill out the form right then you should be fine

surely you have to give a better reason than 'I spotted this car and would like to have a chat to the owner'

surely you have to give a better reason than 'I spotted this car and would like to have a chat to the owner' I think he meant when I actually spoke to the owners. They'd have no reason to worry, I can more than back up the history of the car and my involvement with it. Hell, it's on the road because of me! It'll be a last resort, as I'm sure, mixing in the circles that I do, that I can trace it. Just wondered if there were any other options. To be honest, I thought it would be a nightmare, I'm actually a little spooked at the ease of it all! Still, thanks for all the info guys! Chris

It could be quite arbitary and depends on who deals with it - as a jobsworth will use the DPAct as refusal The OPs reason doesn't really come under the remit of providing the info - but still worth trying
