head stems usually need like 5Nm lol. which is less than a good twist with the hand. Most bikes shops wont do anything less than the usual 15-20, but why would you when your hand can do that It was suggested to me the other day by a customer looking for a torque wrench for that exact reason

mother bounder.
Paul and I just came in from the garage and gave up on this one.
Well before the 13 lbs stated torque in the 1965 Factory Service Manual I have here the sodding threads stripped. Not just on one either. Total onanistic. What toss.
I declare this car to be cursed.
Its now officially "beyond me" to fix this.

If you need an extra pair of hands anytime tell paul to give me a ring, more than willing to help out as I'm sure paul can vouch for. Gutting about the stripped threads, is it not simply a case of getting replacement bolts though and trying again? Maybe get high tensile ones to avoid stripping the threads again?

There is no access to the back to put a nut behind. There are a couple you could do that on, but most are effectively blind. I think that maybe one of the ones I helicoiled has stripped again. I hope I am mistaken on that one. But that was the point at which I declared this to have beaten me. Event the thought of trying to lie under there helicoiling more threads was enough TBH!
I will have to save up, get the thing dragged into a competent workshop which has a ramp and tools/skills to handle this mess and pay someone to sort my curse word up out. Either that or replace the trans and to be honest I know if I try do that my mojo will surely fail and we'll be here in another 2 years talking about why it don't run...

Either that or replace the trans and to be honest I know if I try do that my mojo will surely fail and we'll be here in another 2 years talking about why it don't run... Ah so the threads have stripped in the trans rather than on the bolts? curse word. Ah well, at least it'll get done and maybe back on the road, leave it for someone else to swear at in the meantime! ;D

Some seriously cool Yank cars there.
Oh, I did have a nice little torque wrench, not sure on the exact settings, just had a look round in the garage for it and cant find it at the moment (I guess thats what you get for moving house!). Will look for it again when I get 5 minutes if you need it?

I'm passed needing a torque wrench now, thanks for the offer though. Paul borrowed one off someone he knows and we used it this evening.

Sorry to hear of yet more trouble with this trans. If you need a hand with anything just let me know. May be worth dropping the box and doing the job on a bench?

didn't you have a lexus in the drive AK? you don't need a yank v8, really (well you kinda do for the torque to move it...)

OK, we have an offer of a known-good, non-leaking trans to go in the car. **new plan** drop the rebuilt trans out of the Olds, sort that out "at my leisure" on a bench or however. Mean time we slot in a Cadillac trans which is pretty much the same box and hope for the bext that it doesn't blow up, die, or whatever. I reckon we could have it done in a day. I'll get cakes baked etc.

Bah, not good news on the trans-pan. I want to say if theres anything that I can do....
Maybe a little list is in order to get your head round what needs doing? If that trans is all but dead, are they few and far between to replace? Cost the earth or just a pig of a job? What box is it Jetaway/TH400? is it Olds specific?

I'm thinking tiger Seal! It sounds like a bodge, but i think it'd sort it good and proper, clean everything up, don't use a gasket and just finger tight the remaining bolts in, i doubt it would ever leak and it would happily hold the sump pan on by itself...
It just a thought, feel free to smack me to the ground if it sounds a bad idea... (gotta be worth the £4 to try it)

Swapping the trans for a known good 'un with no leaks seems like the best and easiest* solution! I was lugging gearboxes about only yesterday... got the stiff neck to prove it... * I say easiest, I haven't forgotten what a pain it was last time! ;D

there are a number of technical differences between the Olds trans (a "special" version of the TH400 done 1965-1967 only) and the regular TH400 (1968-1980whenever)
but it should go in and work well enough.
