Nathan, I might have one that will fit Its too big to modify to go in the Kadett casing Its a Quaife ATB LSD, I just need to cross reference with Quaife first...... If its what I think it is then it should fit in a Salisbury axle in the MGB Might need some minor machining to fit but it will be cheaper than £600 Ratio is down to the CROWNwheel and pinion, not the LSD I`ll let you know once I have spoken to Quaife ;D Let me know if your interested Cheers Dom

Could always go with a phantomgrip...although I'm still not 100% convinced by them! Anyone know any better? www.phantomgrip.com/Can get 'em in the UK.

I have heard about the PhantomGrip ones, Aint they like a Kit you put into your diff that acts like a welded version?

Not heard much good TBH about Phantom grip, certainly not in conditions where you need an LSD, IE Rallying or Drifting This ATB that I have, according to Quaife it is LDV400 Sherpa ;D Now I m trying to find out if that axle was shared with any other BL products, because I have heard it it the same as MGB Salisbury type. I will get some Dimensions and post them up, maybe it will fit something else ? Its a 12 bolt CROWNwheel if thats any help Cheers Dom

How do you do this, Of course I know how to weld but what part do you do, Standard MGB Diff's are Plentyfull so this is not an issue, also what disadvantages does this have, Heat? Drift-ability ? Difference? As you can see I am open to sugestions, Money is not really a factor but if i am about to save a bit then thats all cool its goes towards summat else.

You weld up the planet gears IT handles a bit funny, ie you get power on and power off oversteer Back off brake and turn it as you would normally and it starts to come round Will be most noticeable in slow speed stuff Might be better to build your self a Tight normal diff or fit a proper lsd, depends how happy you are drifting

ive a phantom grip in my starlet, its not at all bad for 300euro! i mean its never going to perform anywhere near quaife standards, but in the wet its great fun and it will light two tires in a straight on any surface, the only time it bogs down is if you try to do donuts on dry tarmac but if you want to do that then weld it!

only down side to welded diff, is tyre scrubbing at low speeds, but if your ragging the car anyway your going to get tyre wear (excessive). it will put strain on other components of the drive line, but friends of mine have got them in cars and had them running for over a year without problems(I'm a good few months now and counting)
careful on long sweeping corners in the rain, understeer. but just drive slower and you are fine. basically if you remeber a welded diff is at the rear and will ant to push you on, and drive accordingly there is no danger issues really.

This is all interesting stuff. I'm thinking of going for a Phantom Grip myself. I was hoping that someone here would have one, so I know if it's any good. Does anyone know if it actually strengthens the diff, 'cos some extra strength wouldn't go amiss. It sounds fine for fast road use, which is what I'm after. I could always weld up a spare diff for serious use!!

humm think the Welding of the diff is out the question as the transmission has 250k miles on it so thats probably going to go bang. Phantom Grip sounds good, Now is this a Universal Kit or specfic to Diff\car?

Do some googling first though It seems 50/50 for and against www.moss-europe.co.uk/MossUK/ProductList.aspx?SubSubCategoryID=NewItems_NUTT2218bNot as cheap as I thought either HTH Dom

I havent got the faintest idea how that Phantom Grip thing works and their website doesn't help much. Does any one know the principle?

It exerts pressure on the planet gears in the diff causing them to bind, nothing very clever You can get a similar effect by just building a "Tight" Diff, shimming the planet gears to mesh very tightly together. Or as we used to do, use a shimming material that expands more with heat that way you can pass scrutineering with an "Open Diff" but after a few laps the diff starts to tighten up ;D

thats pretty much it. i put it in my diff them take the clips off, it springs out putting pressure on the sun gears. like i said, you wont be doing a load of donuts on dry tarmac with it, but it does work for the money, great for hanging the tail out at wet roundabouts that bit more than with an open cambridge motorsport in the uk do them, but i got mine from usa

Right Final question then,
How easy are they to fit, I generally work along the Hit and Miss method anyhow but the Diff and Transmission is the only section of the car that I have not taken to bits myself and looked at only changed as a whole component

Surely those bearings are not designed to take big side loads.
