hi all, i'm thinking of buying a car which is retroish, fast, reliable and most importantly with some built in sleeper style, as you'll agree an audi s2 has preety much got all the bases covered but (me being tight) i don't really want to spend loads of cash but high mileage examples are obviously cheaper.
so the question is should i worry about audi s2s with 180k on? the all seem to be priced the same and obviously say "still pulls like a train"
any views or info gratefully received

Well i would say the S2 is quite well known for the power it has.. doubt it would fool any boy-racers at the lights... I'd just say to check for a decent-ish (at least) service history..

It depends on what work outside standard servicing it's had done. Any car after covering 180k is likely to need, or have had a lot of the drivetrain refurbished or replaced. Also the turbo would likely need refurbishing after this kind of mileage.
I've heard the engines themselves are fairly bulletproof but if it develops an engine/drivetrain problem and you start throwing parts at it, it could get very expensive very quickly. Parts for these are not cheap!

As said, Porsche helped with the develop of the S2 AFAIK.
But on the subject of mileage, these cars are now over 10 years old. If mileage hasn't deteriorated some of the parts then a lack of use/age would have done. On that basis, don't go on the mileage of the cars that you look at, but the paperwork, the way the car drives and its overall condition.
To help you out here, people thought I was lying when I told them that my 2000 Peugeot 306 GTi-6 did 120,000 miles. It was lacking ripped seats, non working AC and it was generally tidy, but initially lacking history. I saw 'minters' with 60,000 miles with torn bolsters and tired suspension (age affects suspension remember) going for more money. Understandably, the guy who bought my car in the end thought he got a bargain. I did get some new suspension parts (if you're going to have a performance car, you may as well make sure it has its dynamics!) but then which 7 year old car will have its suspension in its prime irrelevant of mileage?
I guess my final point is, they cost a fair bit back in the day. Don't get one thinking that it can be ran on a shoestring.

I think bits are getting VERY difficult to source for these too! At 180k, sooner or later, there's going to be a big bill or two as well - even if it is just to replace all the bushes - but again, what kind of mileage it's done can play some part here....

As above, have a look at the service history and any bills that might be with it. If it's had plenty done, and seems like it's been serviced and cared for then I wouldn't worry all that much. 180k isn't really excessive for a top end car.

with this being the s2 it won't have any porsche bits on it,so that should help with running costs, but look out for a comprehensive history, have a snoop round see what bits go wrong, and check for evidence of replacement,if not budget for them.
if it looks right,feels right
then why not?

I'd be looking at the general condition of the car in terms of how worn the seats and steering wheel are, which will give a good indication of where it's been used most of it's life.
So far I've run a 97 vectra diesel from 210k miles to 290k miles, and only needed to replace a full set of wheel bearings and an engine mount, then replaced it with a 2001 mondeo with 188k miles on the clock, which is now up to 286k miles. So far thats needed an expensive fuel pump, one wheel bearing and a full set of coil springs. Both cars came from my dads company so I knew roughly what work had been done to them in the past, which wasn't very much it turned out.
In my opinion, if theres lots of audi s2's with high mileages out there, surely that suggests that they are reliable enough to keep on going to possibly 300k miles without too many big bills?

I took my Mondeo to 380,000 miles. In that time it had new springs all round, new dampers, fuel pump (£45 from a scrappy) and a new gearbox (diff blew up at 118k and then again at 380,000 miles). So I'd say the S2 can cope with the miles if it's maintained well.

Front wings are a problem on S2s, as they are hand put together the front bumper rubs on the front wings and rubs the paint off, very common.

TBH mate, i know a few s2 owners and they are GREAT cars, just expensive to maintain and certian parts are getting hard to source, it may be easier to go for the URS4/S6 like i did, all parts are still available, look like ur average estate but have decent performance. the S2 is quite small too.

I'm rolling my W124 E300D at 194,000 - it'll be up to 197,000 in a couple of weeks after another trip to Le Mans, then probably crack 200k a month or so after that (after yet another France excursion). It all depends on condition/servicing I'd buy something with less 4wd personally though
