Picked up this Suzuki in January 07 and used it as a daily until last month.. then it broke down and I parked it in the storage.. some pictures from it in it's old glory.. it broke down in a rallye in the ardennes in belgium, the AA brought it home.. I haven't found out what's wrong though.. There's petrol, there's good spark and the timing is excellent. Still it won't run. It starts perfectly, but dies after 5 seconds.. I decided to do a sensible thing and buy another engine.. from a mk2 swift as the current engine was smoking a bit allready. plan is to rebuild the original cylinder head (bigger valves as mk2) and use the mk2 block and put some cbr carbs on... now I have to figure how to make an inlet manifold for the CBR carbs, as these have an inlet manifold combined with thermostat housing.. so a BMW E30 in line thermostat will be used well as it was inside I thought it was a good tima to look at some parts that needed welding: front inner wing front of the sill welded and treated..... up to the engine work engine bay mk2 cylinder head...for mocking up..

Some nice work on the repairs there.
It's good to see the old Philips Evoluon building in the background too! Went there back in 1973

Removed the engine on saturday.. Coolant was brown, so now I'm 90% sure the headgasket is bust.. head needs to be checked and maybe skimmed also I'll change the clutch, only missing a pressure bearing (or how do you call that) head gasket set is waiting (off the bay) and timing belt was already in stock.

Great! Is the Mk2 engine swap quite straight forward, or will you need to do some modifications? By the way, we call it a clutch release bearing.

It looks straight forward to me.. seems the mk2 engine slots right into the mk1 mounts.. it only is equipped with some extra mounting points for an airco compressor.
the mounts are very old and start to crack, so I'm thinking of filling them with a strong sealer.
I hope I'll remind the term the next time I need it somewhere, thanks!

Had another saturday last weekend to work on the car. Took the old engine apart and found it filled with brown-ish curse word. couldn't find a leaking HG though so dunno if that's the big problem. the block itself seemed on the end of it's lifespan and had giant bump in the bores so it's worn and will be thrown away..
Old cylinder head was stripped down and off course the exhaust tappets weren't give up, they did finally with some help of the grinder, but now they have to be taken out...
that was a saturday well spent (we also cleaned the workshop up so that 3 cars could fit inside instead of 2)
Had a look at the engine yesterday and I guess I'm using the entire new engine (could've just slotted it in in the first place) maybe later try to replace the camshaft for a higher lifting mk1.
I only have to replace the camwheel? because that's damaged somehow and my airwrench is broken and there no option of locking it and not damaging the camshaft.

did some tinkering yesterday, swapped the camwheel? First i mounted the old cylinder head on the block and mounted the distributer belt. then I could remove the bolt from the camwheel the old one was not very straight anymore and mounted the cylinder head on it's block... now I have to choose between a v-belt or multibelt.. any (dis)advantages about them.. I snapped a couple of v-belt.. the other type starts to sqeek earlier.. v-belt and the other alternator is fitted with a multibelt pully waterpumps are almost the same.. have to get a new gasket though.. oh and not to forget, I made a so called "Sjon shot" (picture of you sitting in your engine bay...)

My ex-gf used to have a mk1 GTi, very very fun car to drive, lowered it a bit, lightened flywheel, home made exhaust with a bike exhaust (nice scream when revving it), and some other minor tweaks. Made a lot of people look strange when you stayed on their tail on the motorway, and when they finnaly went out of the way, just put the pedal down and pass them like they were standing still ;D ;D Nobody expected the little buggar to be so fast lots of fun to drive, feels like a little go-kart when lowered. ps: nice place you have to work on your car, is it in Eindhoven??

it's a nice car, borrowed it for a few weeks, last year. Very strange when it broke down in the Ardennes, after 250km going fast... Hopefully it will run in about a few weeks, so there will be space for the other project...(Derby)

last nights work Sanded the inlet flange to get rid of the old gasket, 600 paper and some penetrating oil made it go smoothly mounted the carb hung the engine in the crane, ready to mount back engine code left to do mount flywheel mount clutch put in engine bay and maybe swap the ignition for a vaccuum advanced one, or just set the timing earlier....
