Not exactly rocket science this, but it's damn handy having gasket paper around, for when you need one at 10pm or just CBA going to the factors or waiting for post etc. It comes in different thicknesses so a mixed pack is useful. Making the basic shape, easy enough: A modelling type scalpel is good. B&Q and the like flog fancy boxes of these with different handles & blades for a beer voucher. Sometimes you can run a knife round the outside and inside of a shape. Or might have to make the inside line with a pen and cut it later. Or paint the face, use it like a stamp - not too much paint. Wipe off with thinners after. Very quick and easy. Cutting neat bolt 'oles: Make punches for £0. I've made them from all sorts of tat in the 'might be useful one day' pile - old airline fittings, bits off fuel regulator, bits of tube, etc. Just grind or file the end to a cutting edge. Very quick with a ginder/flap disc, or bench grinder. When punching, put an extra layer of scrap gasket or card under the actual gasket, so the punch cuts right through. Two light taps with a small hammer and it's done, very quick and neat. So you can make 'em in less time that it takes to place an order online / ring up the spares shop / make a brew.

Good tip. What I've also done is use a ball pein hammer and gently tap the gasket paper on the flange which makes a nice neat cut right on the edge. When I was taught to do it this way I always thought that it must damage the lip you hammer against but the paper prevents this (unless you are a dumbass and use a sledge hammer or something)

Probably a stupid question, but when should i use a paper gasket and when should i use a "gasket-in-a-tube" type

I often make a template by putting a piece of paper on the part and rubbing my mucky thumb / fingers over the edges. Then I cut it out and use it as a template on the gasket paper.
I found a sheet of exhaust gasket material years ago in a motor factors that was closing down. Never seen it before or since. It looks like sheets of alu sandwiching some kind of black material. Not used it yet but got it because it may come in handy one day.

Not used it yet but got it because it may come in handy one day. Ah, the words that us classic car owners are most often heard to say

I've heard the hammer edges one before, but if you can lay the thing flat on the paper it should be easier to whizz a knife around without the paper moving about, sorta thing. Maybe. Hammers are always good though Paper vs glop, it depends on what the thing is really. The bit above is off a Landy and the metal piece is less than flat after 45+yrs, so a smear of glop + paper sorts it. Something dry inside, just use paper. No need for glop. Paper's easier to remove later. Might be times when a thing's gasket is meant to squish to a compressed thickness when torqued up, in which case get the OEM one. Rivet guns, I've got me an air one, was only like £18 but so far it's the dog's biscuits and surprisngly hasn't exploded despite el cheapo Chinese-ness... Fingers x'd saying that hasn't seen it off !

use cereal boxes for "free" gasket paper light smear of grease and it lasts just as well. I also mark the gasket by greasing the thermostat housing/manifold/whatever and then slapping the paper over it. grease marks the spot.

I'm currently trying to get my carburettor to seal against an adaptor plate, and the adaptor to seal to the manifold. I've used cereal box card for both (I don't have any gasket paper) and the thing leaks air so much the engine will only run on full choke.
I think I need something slightly thicker to make it seal, and maybe some instant gasket to be safe? The only thing is I can't find any that's fuel resistant. Please help!

I think Haylomar Blue is fuel resistant - horrible gooey stuff but seals. Be careful of how much you use as you don't want it to spread out to much

Thank you! I'll invest in some proper gasket paper and some Hylomar and hopefully that cures it

Check with Demon Tweeks - I think they also sell Haylomar Blue in a spray aerosol - meaning you can give your gasket paper a light coat before fitting rather than running a bead out of a tube. FYI you need a special chemical remove to get it off stuff (Haylomar sell it) once its stuck its a curse word to remove.
