Now, as you remember, we already have a brand new cab waiting to be fitted. I guess this is as good a time as any to do that then?! One thing we hadn't finished was the doors Good doors for these 400Es just don't exist, and neither do repair panels. (Like most of the rest of the body tbh!) So, the one spare door has been receiving some treatment, which I forgot to record, and the original drivers door was deemed to be better (just) than the other spare, so it was set about A new lower half door skin was cut and flanged (by my Dad) Now, there is a very subtle compound curve on the doors of these, so I gave myself a crash course in using this; Pretty damn happy with the result tbf All that remains now is to peen the return of the skin over the frame a,d then i'll be playing with lead!

Thanks MK2VR6. It does look kind of serene in that picture! It's also somewhat misleading, in that it looks like I just drove straight into the ditch. What actually happened was that the impact on the rear wheel launched the truck up in the air (whilst removing the front end of the Peugeot Partner that hit me), rotated me through 180 degrees and threw me into the ditch backwards! The photo is taken from where I'd come from. According to witnesses it was quite spectacular/violent, and I concur that it was most unpleasant being inside!

Blimey, that could have ended up a lot worse than it did.
I'm glad you were not too seriously hurt.
This is a great truck so it is good that you can fix it back up.
Perhaps you should rebuild the original cab for stock, incase you are unlucky enough to come across another bellend on the road.

we must be leading semi-parrallel lives or something, cos my pickup (the hudson rod) also had someone decide they wanted to use my side of the road whilst i was, and has ended up with very similar damage- snapped leaf, wheel bent it half, chassis/crossmember damage etc. etc. but i guess youre as releived as me to have avoided any body damage after all the work on that. chassis ans suspension work seems so much easier to me.
I'm just over a month into the insurance curse word, don't they drive you mad? glad to see you got out ok too though.

Thanks everyone. Dez, yeah, after seeing your bent wheel I kinda wondered if you'd suffered a similar fate. Fortunately we hadn't fitted the new cab yet (i'd probably have cried if we had of) but were just getting things in place to do the swap in the next month or so anyways. Tbh, the mechanical side of things look fairly straight forwards, and the axle is still straight (god knows how?!), so just a couple of replacement wheels, springs and straighten up the crossmembers and should track true. Hopefully the repairs to your pickup will be equally as straight forwards, and I know exactly what you're saying about the insurance companies. *bangs head on wall*

Another day, and more repairs..... Top of door where the glass runners fit Before; After; And the door skin now lead loaded, ready for filling back; In other news, I've had an email from my solicitors today saying the third party have admitted liability. So just the settlement to argue about now!

....... the third party have admitted liability. So just the settlement to argue about now! Great repairs and thankfully liability has been admitted which 'should' mean a straight forward settlement (if such a thing exists) John

Don't count on a quick settlement if you're claiming solely off the third party and asking for cash in lieu. I'm 5 weeks in and have got pretty much nowhere, you will be at the mercy of the uneducated opinion of the third party assessor.
I would highly recommend if you have an admission of liability to claim off your own (presumably specialist) insurance. they can authorise a payment and let them claim it all back off the third party. If you go to the third party direct they arethe ones who authorise it, and they will fightyou for every penny. I very much wish I had done this now but was given bad advice by my brokers solicitors an have ended up in a right mess because of it.

So, things have been steadily progressing. Would have preferred more action, but pesky work that pays teh bills keeps gettng in the way! A vehicle never looks more sad than when it's face is removed 'Interior' stripped; Cab unbolted and removed ready for engine removal; New crossmember fabricated; Cab now gone, engine and gearbox removed; Whilst the engine is out we've treated it to a set of big end shells, just to keep things tight. Chassis cleaned and freshly blacked; The rolling chassis is now in the workshop for a couple of small repairs to remove some 'blowing' between the double skinned areas. Next week will see the front suspension freshened up a little, some moe chassis black, and the engine and gearbox refitted hopefully. I've also refurbished a replacement set of rear leaf springs and fitted the back axle in, but I forgot to take pics. I'll grab some later.

Hi Kev, Yeah I noticed work had been a little slow on yours! Ah, bum gravy! I've just bought pretty much everything we needed from Sandy off of the owners club. Could possibly be interested in the axle though as a spare (subject to monies ) PM me a price on it if you want rid

Right, so a couple of localised repairs have been done on the chassis, and the rest of it blacked; The rear axle has been rebuilt, with new bearings/seals and also a new stronger diff; The original diff was getting a bit whiney (like my ex-missus) so it was replaced with a later '4 pinion' type. Basically, 4 idler gears instead of 2, so effectively twice as strong.) Difficult to make out in the photo, but the input pinion is so worn, it's almost 'knife-edged' the teeth; Couple of pics showing the relocation of the alternator to allow it to fit in the chassis;
You may also notice the modifications we made to the sump to fit in the relatively narrow engine bay And the engine bay, showing the platforms fitted and nice new flexible mounts ready for the engine; And this is how it stands at the end of today. Engine/gearbox back together and bolted into the chassis, freshly painted fuel tank fitted, along with the filter and lift pump; And a little nod to the industry I'm mostly associated with; That's proper painting and not a transfer. I can't claim credit for the swag of roses, but it was done by my Mother (who has done all the traditional painting on their narrowboats) after much persuasion.
