I've been keenly watching this on the 'bay: ![](http://i.ebayimg.com/05/!BT+FMSQ!2k~$(KGrHgoH-CYEjlLl9odTBKLR+4f8E!~~_12.JPG) ![](http://i.ebayimg.com/14/!BT+FOtg!mk~$(KGrHgoOKjIEjlLmWpluBKLS!DE2U!~~_12.JPG) Given my recent fascination with old Audis, this caught my eye as a good base. The seller reckons he'll renew MOT & tax at buyer's cost before collection, assuming a good selling price. Now, I'm almost certainly not going to actually get it, since I'm totally skint... and my girfriend would hit the roof if I bought another car! However, I'm getting more and more tempted as the auction end approaches... So, if I were to buy it, I reckon the first move would be to slam it and roll it on steels, upgrading to alloys later. What would be the cheapest way of getting it on the floor? I'd imagine lopping a few coils off the springs would be the cheapest route, but I have neither the space to work on a car nor the confidence in my own abilities to do it! What do we think? And, of course, what would you do with such a base? ;D

these are the same underneath as a santana..... I slammed mine as far as I could ... it was on bumpstops ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) and it still wasnt what you would call slammed... this is as low as it went.... the springs and shocks are realy short from factory ![](http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i161/turky642003/012-3.jpg) also i love the disc where it says its only covered 9,700 miles... when its actually 97,000 lol

I am in Leicester and happy to go and check it over for you if you like before you bid! A very kind offer - I'll let you know if I need to call on your services, cheers mate. Retrowagen - that really surprises me. The impression you get from the VAG scene is that they're happiest on the floor, so I wasn't expecting to hear that!

I'm not sure on the pcd of the early 80/100 range... think they might be 4x100 ya know.. but I'm willing to be proved wrong, i just remember seing some early 80 alloys on a mk2 polo at a local meet a while back. On the lowering: the shock sits very high inside the coilspring so when you chop the coils the top of the shock will hit the top (via the bumpstop) i chopped mine down too as it was physically sat on the bumpstop all the time so it dropped a bit more.... i think you can get lowering springs for early 80's but not easily and scouring german ebay is probably the answer.... but then as i said its still restricted to how far it can drop unless you want to go over the top and start hacking the front around... but even then your restriced by the travel in the lower wishbones....... its endless realy. your better off giving it a healthy lowering job and some nice wheels and be happy with it rather than trying to go too low.... the santana above used to hit the crossmember and pretty much the entire exhaust on the deck and its doenst look that low

I'm 99.999% sure they're 4x108, the volkswagen stuff was 4x100. I was caught out trying to find alloys for my C reg Audi 100. Luckily theres more 4x108 alloys than atoms in the universe.

This model of 80 is 4x100 definately as i have the same model! Ive lowered mine 60mm all round using a kit on german ebay - of which there are many options. Mine certainly looks a lot lower than the santana above with slight tuck on the rear wheels and the top of the front tyres level with the top of the arch on the front and looks pretty good, all on standard steels.
Also the springs and shocks i got from german ebay were very cheap, havnt done many miles on them so cant comment on their longevity but it looks cool and has to be better than chopped springs! Hope this helps - cool car!

the santana wasnt lowered on the rear .. and the wheels are 13" with 165 65 13's so they don't come near the arch lol. the original steels and 185's did tho.....

Buy a 2226cc straight-5 lump for next to nothing from me and make it sound tasty - you're missing half the point of an old audi (imo) if you don't have a 5-pot!

The one in the last issue of Retro Cars was on air, with modified struts/suspension to get it down that low
looked ace though!

Go different; slam it on huge shiny rims, VIP-style sorta. these are hard to slam, I have a 85 passat that is the same and the front shocks have the tracking arms on them. so hard to find collies or so, I am sorting this prob on mine in the winter and will post up how I go about it. other wise, I love them. lovely cars, loads a room and style. go for it.

those Type 81s are nice and rare these days.... they had 4/100 and the suspension at the front is the same as the Passat Mk.II, the rear is different though.... you'll get a couple of lowering kits for this car, even -70mm, that should be more than enough with the proper tyres.... if you buy one, check the rear axle mounts, they are prone to be very rusty on the early cars (up to 1980), and the last two available mounts have been bought by me , so no more available ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) The only thing that would be a "no" for me on this car would be the autobox, i'd go for a manual one...

Had this idea a few days ago, I'm never gonna do it, so I'll pass it onto someone who might. Not slammed but different and deffo a car they should've made. ![](http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z88/Captain_Slow1991/80quattro.jpg) Win.
