Great stuff Mark, just caught up with this.
Just to confirm what Mirafioriman has been saying. You need to slacken off the reataining nut on the the steering box and "loosen" the hex screw (anticlockwise).
If i remember right the W123 boxs will fit too - incase you need a replacement.
Regarding your elec tric woes, have you checked the fusebox for any rust, if the front seal is a bit dodgy and water gets in then they can start playing up a bit.

Better off with the arms as you will then have two new ball joints also.

Great stuff, thanks guys! Oldbus - thanks for the reply. I slept in this morning, so I reckon I'm going to tackle the steering adjustment first to try and help the mojo! Out of interest, how is the steering box in that rotten old 240D of yours? As for the electrics, I found most of the bad connections were in fact fuses that had oxidised! I'm going to leave the electric chasing for a while now, until I get the car solid and the steering sorted. The electrics are at a point now where it's good enough to hit the road! Any advice on adjustment? Can I adjust them too far? How do I know if the box is worn out? mira - I'm going to order the arms as soon as the seller gets back to me confirming postage price! Any pics of your Mercs?

Live from the garage... Got the steering adjusted - ta for the tip on the engine mounts - 100% spot on, loosened one side off and jacked up the engine - hey presto, adjustment. I adjusted it a little, it's now within acceptable tolerances (I think). I've also removed the drivers side upper control arm. The bush doesn't look awful, but is definitely past it's best. Passenger side is worse. Really want to get these ordered and on, still waiting for a reply from the seller. Had a good poke around the other bushes, they don't look too bad, I reckon I'll leave them and hope for the best for now. More bad news on the rust however - it goes all the way up the drivers side along the sill. It basically means that this car is now worse than the 115 was which is a child born out of wedlock It's a bit of a reality check that this car won't be back on the road as soon as I'd hoped which upsets other project related plans! When I was working on the 115 flat out, it still took 2 weekends with a solid weeks worth of nights in between, and alot of that was with 2 people and most of the cutting out complete! This will take longer. Ah well, I'll soldier on.... P.S - Ben, I need to have a playday over here!!!

The box on the 240D is knackered mate so no help to you unfortunately.
When you undoe the hex screw you´ll notice the steering tighten up and will have more resistance in the steering wheel - i just turn them back a bit to free it up a gain - much like adjusting a wheelbearing. Hopefully a professional will be along to answer your question properly but it´s worked for me the last 20 years mate. ;D

Could have done with that for the W115. If I'm honest, I want to cut out the inner and outer rear arches and redo. W116 Sill is looking like a tempting buy, but for the fact that the floor is rotten around there too \o/

I'd be there like a shot mate (with my massive experience of juicing 1 motor) ;D
Tbh the biggest problem you'd have is getting all the required bits in the UK (pumps, rams, accs, etc..) - fitting it up is the easy bit compared to that. That said, the help available on various forums (UKLows, here..) is awesome and the bits are out there!
Also, Mr Chops is a legend ;D

Massive Mojo fail on this one. Spent the whole day there today, with 2 mates. All they did was find more rot. Looking at a full on resto now which is a bit gutting, I paid way over the odds I now have to have it done in the next 2 months (racing seasons) or else it will remain undone for months. Photos to follow later/tomorrow, but not too many because I was too depressed. A slightly defeated Mark

I have the same with my Fiat. Every time I get a bit welded up and feel happy I discover more rot to deal with!
Keep at it. At least it will have been done properly when you get it finished.

W116s are desperately rot-fond, mate - sad to hear yours isn't as nice as it looks.
I find the prospect of hip hop, sunshine and early evening cruises rejuvinta mojos pretty quickly.

Cheers guys. I will not be beaten. It's just gutting that I'll have to go so far with the car and destroy alot of the paintwork as it is one of the best paint jobs I've ever seen!
