Seriously guys, I know this is OT, but my local FreeCycle (now branded RealCycle for some reason) is a honey when it comes to getting free stuff which is of great use to the Retro-Rider on a tight budget. This week's haul... I have got: 1x pillar drill (unused!) 1x bench vice (like new) 1x bench grinder + polishing attachement 1x polishing kit, the type you pay £40+ for at autojumbles... 1x digital caliper, boxed like new 1x 4" angle grinder "I think the motor is a bit rough sounding" 1x 5" electric DA sander, boxed, looks great. 5x diamond cutting discs 10 pack of grinding discs 1x ear defenders 2x plastic tray racks for sorting bits out in. one of those "assorted stainless steel fastners" kits, about 75% full 1x well vintage looking grease gun 1x retro petrol can with a gallon of petrol in it 1x tub of "fine finish" body filler 2x 1 litre DOT4 brake fluid 2x Draper axle stangs (1800kg) a big bag of wire wool a little parts sorting rack thing I've also had some non-retro / non-car stuff which has been pretty good. I find the trick is to bez up a "wanted" ad, same time as you offer up some stuff. People seem to respond more generously when you are paying into it as well as taking out if you see what I mean. A lot of the good stuff that gets offered gets snapped up pretty quick and I often miss it.

Lordy Akku, I missed all of those! I get a fair bit of PC related stuff off the local ones, there are two though freecycle and realcycle and you can sign up to both.
Cracking haul though! I got two nearly new tyres for the Mungdaneo 16" and really expensive off there recently as well!
It really is great though Recycling FTW!

You mean that isn't what you normaly carry in the boot 'just in case'? ;D Looked into joining my local freecycle group as I was after something for a little project i've been planning (and have got plenty of stuff in the shed/garage/loft I do with getting shut of). I was put off by the bit that said 'why do want to join Freecycle in less than 200 words' Smacked to much of being back at school...

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

mattblack WTF? Some of these groups can be run by little Hitler types I guess. I can't recall being asked anything like that. (ah, I just looked, thats a standard feature of Yahoo groups. Just put "I want to recycle my old stuff" or something. Most get arsey if you post lots of want ads all the time. Most have a load of bottom feeders trying to run their life for free / eBay /car boot stalls / etc. and people askling for "free iPhone wanted, must be in perfect condition and unlocked for vodafone" etc. Ignore the dross, there is LOTS, and there is some good stuff. there was a free Mk2 Polo "breadvan" on Notts Freecycle a while ago, I think Guz got it. rysz - I think I joined freecycle but it became realcycle and I dunno why. If theres two rival ones I best make sure I'm on both! Lee: Freecycle is an internet based group for giving away your old but still useable junk. www.freecycle.org/group/UK/East%20Midlands/Nottingham

I was on Warrington Freecycle. Never got much, but the mrs is still on and we have managed to rehome a pine bedroom suite, and a 28" widescreen telly that worked but whistled abit. Ideal for a knowledgeable tinkerer to swap the capacitors over.

I'm on a number close to me.
Overall I've given away more than I've received. But I did get a Fiat Seicento (cost £5 to get going again) and a Kawata scooter for free from there.

I 'de-signed' up due to amount of emails you get in the day (even in 'digest' form), and stupid messages from moderators. I nearly got my hands on a 1.8 Vectra engine, nearly got a new Astra backbox, and NEARLY got a 1989 Saab 900 Turbo!!!

I too found the amount of emails annoying and pretty pointless, I think it should leave the 1996 mailing list format behind and use something more appropriate and useful (even a Proboards forum would be better). As a result I gave up on it. Shame really. That and the only stuff that ever came up on my local one was plastic boxes, soiled curtains, etc.

And got such gems as bicycles, a frisbee, kitchen sink, speakers, and 40 pallets!

Best item of the day for our area "a set of light girly dumbells , a small box kitchen stuff (2 frying oan, a little cheese grater and a vase in it ) and a few ring binders with lots of poly pockets in it" Wonder if there is going to be a mad rush for quality as good as this ;D

I just gave away some sheets of Polystyrene insulation rather than chuck them away.
