thinking A-levels the way foward...everyone i talk to seems to have a great time doing them!
What would you suggest, coz I aint got a clue...

It all depends on what you want to do and where. I was coerced into A-levels at my high school's 6th form. It was terrible, I got E, E, D for my AS'. Then I retook different AS levels at Newcastle college, had a great time, worked in Safeway whenever I could. Results were mediocre at best due to my severe exam anxiety. I can recite the entire syllabus before I go into an exam hall but as soon as I'm in there, I get pale, shake, vomit then pass out.  I dropped out of my A2 year though...about 2 months before the exams. I knew that my coursework was spot on but I didn't have the faith in myself to do the exams. I got the first IT job that raised it's head (tech support for Hewlett Packard), made less money than I did being a dogsbody at Safeway (literally - I did everything other than work the tills and clean the loos), stuck it out for 6 months, landed a 6 month contract at BT Major Business as a technical project manager for networking installations, went from there into a few temporary contracts (days/weeks long) and then on to working tech for Microsoft. After 12 months, my department got canned and I've been an Account Manager for Cisco Systems for the last 6-odd weeks. I'm the only one in my department with any technical knowledge. I've nearly completed my CCNA and MCSE and I'm not using them in my job...My customers do appreciate having an account manager who actually understands their business though. Gonna stick this one out for a while - the atmosphere is good, my colleagues are good, the job isn't taxing and virtually does itself for 50% of the time but still has that head-down-get-on-with-it thing that I enjoy. Ideally I'd like to move into a more technical project/account management role as I'm a geek at heart... ...I'll just bide my time for now though. *n |

regarding A levels - do what you are good at and do what you enjoy - if you want to do them. no mistake, they are hard work! The hardest learning years of your life imho.

I'd certainly agree with that. Irrespective of people who claim they keep getting easier, it's still a couple of years of graft if you want to get through with decent results. Uni is a walk in the park by all accounts.
but, as I said above, it's all down to what you want to do.

btecs are just as good as a-levels, wish i had done either a btec or gone to art school. friend of mine did an engineering btec for two years (same length and mark as a-level) and has been working for prodrive for years and on the aston martin dbr9 at the moment.

definitely true!!
If you know what u wanna do it life then start taking the right steps (be it education or working)
If you don't know what u wanna do in life, then just take the path that you enjoy the most until things drop into place.

Penski - Finally an Account manager who is technical, ones that aint (I.E the ones at my place are total dumb sh*ts).
for myself I left school with total Pants GCSE's (mainly becuase I did not do the revision), went to college did various IT courses Fron Intermediate to advanced, then moved to Virtual reality Research courses (Very neat course)then I went off to do a Degree in computer science and added to that degree with Multimedia and Virtual Reality (Probably the best 4 years ever Just creating Games and Sprites/Players in 3ds)
And now I have ended up here doing System Secuirty

My colleagues are technospazzes to the extent that their customers call me if it's slightly technical :/
I've noticed that IT tends to be quite a 'stumbling' career...Taking things as they turn up...Not very stuctured.

thanks for the replies guys. I've learn the revision lesson when i managed to get an E in a Science modular test - i was expected a C+, that got me moved down to Foundation level, did another 3 in June and got 3 Cs tho  I was doing a course for people in year 10 and 11 where you go to the local college for a day and do an apprenticship, and apart from the other 4 people who did it being bumms i really did enjoy it, however, i dropped out this year because it meant missing a Science, English and Maths lesson...aswell, as an after school maths lesson for modular 10 which would allow me to get A* (how much i would buzz if i got that! ). I came to the decision, that, i'm capable of A-levels and GCSEs so should focus on those. I made a mistake in not doing an ICT GCSE, instead choosing History  , I study at school now english, maths, science, electronics, engineering, history, and re. which totals, if i pass all, would be 12 I dunno what i want to do in life, i worked last year on the apprentice in a local factory called Stadium Electronics, making circuit boards funnily enough (  ! ), with the production manager guy i reckon and i really did enjoy that. so i think i want to go into engineering / research, development. My dad has pointed me in the way of an Mechanical Engineering degree if i want to go into Engineering. Next summer when i've finished school i plan to go and work in a garage that a Skoda friend manages, which i am really looking foward too as it will really improve my practical skills. if i do A-levels i was planning on doing Maths and Physics (which i know will be difficult) and something else, which will be less difficult. I dunno, its hard making decisions... this thread has gone a bit off topic - lol. |

I got a U in GCSE IT...
They mean nothing - A levels, although difficult are only worth it to get points to go to uni....If you want to go to uni that is.
