Okay, this one will be a bit silly, and we may well cross over into the 'anorak zone' but someone has to do it! ![](http://www.seriouswheels.com/pics-1950-1959/1950-Volkswagen-Beetle-Brown-eb-sb-2.jpg) Split Window, no badges ![](http://photos.coker.com/data/512/1955-vw-beetle-blue.jpg) ![](http://www.philseed.com/images/vw1958r-malta.jpg) Oval window, VW and Wolfsburg badges ![](http://www.rossvw.com/vw/pics/DSC05174.jpg) 1958, Early square window ![](http://www.superactiongo.com/vw/images/back_s.jpg) Mid-60's, slightly larger square window ![](http://www.the-hoffs.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/70beetle.jpg) Late '60s/early '70s, lots of detail changes, note engine cover shape, also bigger front windscreen, etc. ![](http://www.superactiongo.com/vw/images/back_p.jpg) S-bug, coil springs on the front and rubber dash, but still with the nice-looking small tail-lights ![](http://carcrazy.ca/images_cars/2007-09-07-16-42-37-lg.jpg) End of the line, the L-bug. Huge ugly tail-lights, ugly (higher-peaked) fenders, rubber dashboard and coil springs. Whew! So, if you thought they were all the same, now you know!

you didn't mention the bumper changes ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) Lol, I also didn't mention the changes to engine, wheel stud pattern, brakes, etc. I thought it best to stay concise and on topic. I would imagine there's probably already a detailed Beetle history thread somewhere around here. I will say though, that one significant factor in the survival of the breed is the small crescent-shaped vent which they introduced behind the rear window on the S-bugs and L-bugs (black rubber thing visible in the 2nd-last photo). This lets in water, which is trapped by the late-model-only foam insulation, hence causing the Super-Bugs to rust out under the back window much faster than their ancestors. Just one reason why I'm glad to have a 1970 1500, which is in my very biased opinion the best of the breed. All the mod-cons like disc brakes and sensible 12V electrics, but without any pesky smog control gear or ugly add-on safety features from the Super-bugs.

Yantorsen, you forgot (although I suspect intentionally): ![](http://www.aronline.co.uk/images/sd1_06.jpg) Early Series 1 ![](http://www.aronline.co.uk/images/sd1press_03.jpg) Later Series 2 ![](http://www.aronline.co.uk/images/cotm200612_01.jpg) Late Vitesse

I didn't include the P5B and various others too, I was only really focusing on the main P cars though, because after the SD1 you could go onto the 800, and the 75 etc...
