So this is a build thread for my good friend Austin, who is 18 and does all the work on all his cars. I am copying posts of his from another forum onto here, since I knew you guys would appreciate the build. He is building the bug for his dad. It had been sitting in the garage for a few years, and posed a challenge. In the beginning... He cleaned the garage up, made it workable. Pan Rust! Mk2 VR! Another swap done all by austin when he was 17. Fun w/ compressed air. Old 1200 out! The donor engine is an ej22. its the mildest ej engine offered. ~135 hp. which is reasonable when pushing a 1500 pound car that came with 36hp... this one is out of a 92 legacy. they came from 90-99 legacys and were offered as an option in I believe 95-99 imprezas. heres the car. it was $500 with 113k miles on it. and heres the engine coming out of the car. I will have more progress pics later. ;D

Loving the animated engine-removal, that's ace! ;D
That engine should give the Bug some oomf indeed. Going to follow this one.

How did that subaru reverse away with no engine? Remarkable. Austin sounds like a bit of a legend, keep us posted on his movements!

excellent love the pic pic of austin FTW - mech god ;D i should have specified, the red headed man is a friend of ours. He has a 93 corrado. Moar pics/progress: A Toyota tercel SR5 radiator was sourced for the bug. and a hole was cut in the body where the spare tired used to sit. bracket for it rad shroud cutting to shape. done i removed the trays on either side of the engine bay to open up the bay. heres where the anti-surge tank i built for my high pressure fuel pump is mounted. Test fit the intake manifold will need to be flipped around because there isnt enough room between the firewall and the throttle body for an intake tube. this means making some sort of mount for the alternator because it wont fit where its supposed to with the manifold backwards. i have the wiring harness cut down to just engine bay stuff and diagnostics but still need to integrate it into the car. also have to wire up these: excuse the small curse word up around the right turn indicator. the red lights are oil pressure and cel. i plan on wiring it complete enough that the cel functions correctly. it will be "das rat" for a while but eventually it will be resprayed red with discs all around. also will need a built transmission because i don't think the one in it will last very long. it will be 5x130 to fit the new in box 15x6 fuch reps that have been sitting in my uncles garage for ~20 years. i have some nice bolstered seats for it as well from the same garage. possibly airbags in the future as well. then after this is done my dad has brought up the idea of an ej25t 914. Here is the intake mani and a test fir on the alternator. thats what ive mocked up so far. not sure if it will provide enough support for the alternator...ignore the right side of the bracket. its an old garage door opener bracket. thats all i had laying around. everything will be trimmed and painted once its figured out. what the alternator bracket ended up looking like: Stock Subaru wiring harness. a few hours into unwrapping and sorting through the harness. Box of scrap wires that were not needed for the bug. he spent 20 hours in one weekend on making the harness for the bug out of the Subaru harness. That's pretty much all that has been done up to this point. He has made some more progress lately, but he says he wants to make his own account on here to continue posting the build himself. ;D -Curt

Austin's family also has a 92 mk2 gti 2.0 16v as the back-up daily vehicle, when the VR mk2 is out of commission.

I'm a little annoyed with the VR right now. I just replaced the block and it stopped running again shortly after. I haven't figured out whats causing the lack of compression. That car has been apart more than its been together. :banghead: It's a love/hate relationship. I love it, it hates me. Interior crocodile alligator, I drive a chevrolet movie theater. The fender is shaved in photoshop. This is me on an average day...

Hi. I'm Austin's little brother. I live in the same house. I should be working on the 92 GTI right now... along with my English homework. Curt, you used multiple points of view; "he" and "I".

How well did the Subaru engine bolt up to the gearbox?

To mount the engine to the transmission i used an adapter plate from Hecker. ( www.heckermachine.com/) It came with the plate and a modified flywheel. I was impressed with the quality and plan on buying from them next time. I had to remove the rear apron for clearance but I plan on using bolts to reattach it when the time comes. I also had to grind on the bell housing a little bit because it is a 1200 transmission which is meant for a 180mm clutch. You would have to do the same type of modification to fit a 1600 with 200mm clutch. I plan on replacing the transmission shortly after i get the car running because it will not hold up to the extra hundred horsepower. I will also need to create a little clearance for the heads of the lower bolts which hold the plate to the engine because they rest on the transmission mount and keep the engine from seating completely.

Small update. I have started working on the integration of the wiring harness. I have spent the last few days working out how to get power to the harness. The Subaru had a fuse panel in the engine bay as well as one under the dash. I found that the bay box basically distributes battery/alternator power. I only wanted to use one panel but neither of the panels would work alone. I decided to find a way to modify the engine bay panel. I needed two fuses to be switched by the ignition. I made some modifications to the diagram to match what I am doing. It's far from perfect/complete but it's a good reference/starting point. The panel: Started taking things apart: The track on the left is switched power for the headlight relays. This is the only track on the board that is switched so i had to connect to it. I drilled two holes big enough to fit wires through and put a jumper between the tracks. The section that I modified happened to be in the middle of a large track. After cutting it out of the track i had to complete the circuit. I took apart the interior fuse panel and found a section that would fit. I used this to make the connection. And now I am ready to start building the connectors the way that i want them. I will see if i can get this worked out this weekend.
