I was in Bolton on Monday night and saw a Honda Civic. It stopped next to me at the lights. When they went green I set off fairly slowly and he gave it the full moo, making a huge amount of racket from his 6" exhaust through the gears. I was changing up at 2500-3000 revs in my Alfa and, despite the huge noise, he didn't pull away. That is too noisy.
There's a bloke near me with a chopped up Discovery off-roader that sounds pretty much unsilenced. It sounds like a TVR and that is just right.
I think what I'm saying is that it depends on what sort of noise the exhaust is amplifying.

I like the muted sound you get from turbocharged cars. Not exactly quiet but no harshness or buzzing, but with a screamer pipe. Lovely tearing ripping noise when you get close to full boost.

Nothing like a V8 bellow coming from a Defender going like the clappers up a steep hill!! Depends on what engine in my opinion. Like Keith said most of the fartcanned japs are way too loud for how much engine they've got

I used to like the sound of my Imprezza when I de-catted it. It seemed just about right. Not too loud, just the right burble and a nice growl when hitting the loud pedal. A buddy of mine had a Type R STi with a full 5 Zigen system on it. You couldn't hear him coming up behind but when he overtook, boy was that thing loud! The ground shook and made me jump every time. ;D Got to agree with the V8 though. You can't beat a decent V8 when on full song.

It's the tone that's most import to me, an exhaust should bubble, gurgle and growl like an animal. The noise should be unmistakably combustion in action, all relative to how hard the engine is working.
A lot of exhausts you hear are a droning boom that pierces the air even at tick over, when the engine works hard the rasp and sound wrong to me.

I like it to be appropriately loud. It's what's great about Webers with a suitably wubbered engine attached to them; sound like they mean business when chugging around, then all hell breaks loose when you open them up

I have two v8 land rovers. One has 4-2 cast iron manifolds with twin downpipes either side, which join into two single pipes either side, wrap around the gearbox, join together in a 2.5" pipe with a single straight through oval can and straight out the back. It's deep and burbly but civilised, and when opened up, sounds awesome. The other has cast iron 4-1 centre dump manifolds, with two pipes either side which wrap around the gearbox and exit out the back through the same 2.5" pipe and single straight through oval can, but has such a different sound, almost big block with an uneven and lumpy tickover, and is pure porn. From my experiments with building bodge-it exhausts, the manifold has a huge impact on the type of sound that comes out the back. A few simple bends under the car and a cherrybomb or two to reduce the harshness works for me every time.

I have no problem with a loud exhaust so long as the car it's attached has the power to back up the racket. I agree the majority of overly bazzed up stuff tends to be knackered Japanese grey imports, or superminis that little Johnny max power HAS to customise to be 'indervijual'. (a certain 1.25 Zetec Fiesta round my way swings to mind - he and his PHAT MOTA came blezzing down a back road sounding like the fires of Hades but couldn't get away from a four up diesel C4 driven by a fat man). My Amazon has a 2" downpipe and backbox running from the standard pish SDP manifold. It's quiet and unobtrusive around town but whistles given some throttle. It really helps the breathing as well, given that at present my 1.8 litre engine is strangled by a 32 mm carb of the worst design known to man (apart from the Ford Autolite of course). Apologies for when the phone camera falls over due to the COLOSSAL AIR PRESSURE DIFFERENCE

most of the time the car has to have the go to match the show for me, but a decent lumpy tickover burble and a good throaty roar when you plant your foot is always good. Have to say I love the twisted performance exhausts for landrovers as well. Not really heard a diesel sound that good before

Fatha dugong has an E60 525d and that makes a good luxobarge roar when you boot it.

whats the legal mot decibel rating The MOT doesn't measure decibels. The handbook says the exhaust shouldn't be "unreasonably loud" so it's up to your testers discretion. The fuzz can still pull you over for causing a disturbance, but yet again up to discretion (as far as my understandnig stretches).

exhaust needs to be just right for the application . the exhaust on the estate is just the one from the V6 for now and only single pipe so its a little muted at the moment but has a nice sound to it

Totally depends on engine and car! My car is pretty ridiculously loud, but it goes OK (late 80's design BMW), but the rasping note is quite good! Wish it was a little quieter until about 3000rpm, and then sounded like it does now, but that can't be helped - put a midbox in and it goes a bit farty and loses power.
V8's can sound awesome - see corvettes with a decent exhaust! Most 2.0l+ engines can sound really good.

If you can hear the exhaust over the engine - something is wrong.
How mine will sound once I have the pennies for engine management!

Always liked the sound of my metro's Maniflow exhaust. Sounds almost like a standard exhaust when driving along normally, but when you put your foot down it sounds real throaty.

Like that. A pleasing note at cruising speed, which doesn't do your head in (and where many fall down) - yet an awful lot of presence, you can feel and hear it coming yet it's not at all intrusive or unpleasant. Plus a good roar when you do open the taps a bit And if you park in a multistorey, you can set off the surrounding 5 or so car alarms on startup No trouble with the Police either, as it wasn't an irritating noise. Plus, well, how could you argue with that thing....
