^^good point BC
the guy does it as 'exchange' - ie you just throw your bottle in the back, then he brings you a full one - different bottle every time!!
- so I might get away with it if it's ancient!!

One of the widely used shielding gasses for MIG work is plain carbon-dioxide, or CO2. While it is in the bottle, CO2 is really an inert gas, but technically it turns into carbon monoxide and oxygen under the intense heat of the arc process. The oxygen can combine with other elements in the air and in the parent metal to form undesirable oxides. Thus, plain CO2 will not usually result in as clean a weld as with other gasses, but it is used often because it is the least expensive shielding gas for welding steel. It will weld very fast, with good penetration, but you should use a welding wire that contains deoxidizing elements to counteract the effect of pure CO2.
lifted from the haynes welding manual. I use boc argoshield light , argon/co2 mix. pure argons not good either for mig. oh and a good tip , if using a clarkes fig welder , change the earth clamp for a good quality lincoln clamp from boc , costs about a tenner. difference it makes is a lot. the factory unit is a thin copper pressed item. cant handle continuse welding.

Thanks for that Aqua genius.
Oldbus brought me a new, full medium sized CO2 bottle, and the spare I got off here, will get the same treatment.... pubgas or fire extinguisher CO2 for welding.
Will deffo look at clamps and earthing, makes a huge difference.

Go around a few local machine shops if you know any. I payed a £40 deposit for my first large bottle then £28 whenever I want a refill, where I just take the old bottle back and get given a new full one.
