I hate being called "dude"... Anyway, I've been visiting that site since it was just a spash page - it looked like fun at first. If the KCW site is anything to go by, they'll sooner or later start shutting off bits of it for subscription only and plugging their merchandise to hell and back when the time is right. Plus I note that the various "chapters" (another bloody Americanism, hurrah...) are generally 'run' by people who already had their own little exclusive sects anyway... ribbed bumper Splits with big motors for example. If people really didn't give a toss about what other people thought, and really wanted to be different, they wouldn't feel they had to stencil a trademark on their car... IMHO. Still, it provides hours of entertainment on the forums at thesamba.com, so I suppose it all evens out... (Oh, and as for egos and politics... well again, it's tricky to square that all up with the KCW angle... like two sides of a cynical coin...) Sorry, I won't call you that again, youa re entitled to your views, but to me, it makes a refreshing change. Other RRers are posting non VW's on there at the moment, and gettin positive feedback from the people on there. Shall we just put this one down as an "agree to disagree"?

I've been visiting that site from before the forum was hacked and in the earlier days they had a whole lot more than just VW's, but on the whole the site is predominantly volkswagen based. I personally don't catagorise it as a 'Rat' thing, looking through the pictures of the rides then many are far from ratty. It's more an attitude thing, its just saying I drive what I like and how I like it, if you don't like it then fine, its my thing. Like here its a site for people who drive their cars and don't just store them away until its time to trailer them to shows. Its also true that its affiliated with KCW and that KCW is now subscription but I cant see DBD turning the site into a commercial venture, its not about the money its about similar minded individuals having a place to express there thoughts and idea, arrange meets, and to share on a global scale. And as for trademark stencil and people putting it on their car, isnt that just the same as placing a sticker in your car or changing an AA badge to represent your favorite car forum Thats just my opinion of course and we are all entitled to our own. Its like Marmite. You like it or you don't.

w123 in da house: There wasn't any real way of making money out of "rat look" so a new genre, with logo (...sorry, "affiliation tag") had to be created... clever clever.
Not at all the feel I get after cruising that site for a while, but I could be all out there...
My feeling about HoodRide is just plain possitive, posted a picture of a snowmobile I picked up that has a serious HoodRide flavour, quite obvious NOT a VW, although air-cooled and it was all thumbs. Some of the members seems quite involved in the Hot Rod Culture and as a Hot Rod, Kustom, Chopper, Vintage race car, Vintage bike builder/owner of 30 years I feel the cars @ HoodRide.com is like a breath of fresh air so much I have looked both 2 & 3 times at an early Baywindow sitting behind a barn a few km's down the road and anny day now I will go in and make an offer, drag it home and HoodRide it next summer, the ultimate hauler for a primer cut & paste street fighter Ducati Monster....
I don't really understand why so many people, specially on Forums feel so intimidated and sometimes even threathened by "another Forum" that does something with a twist, this is verry obvious on some of the Forums I surf (ca 30 regularly), fex the "Old School Scooter Scene", if it's NOT tin and you don't like Madness you'r not good enough, I have both tin & PVC scoots and was banned from a "Old School" Forum just because I had Italjet Formula MHR Racer in my sig, that sucks!!!! See a bit of this in some of the VAG scene and it's booring me to death as is the discussion of who's more "Rat Style" than other and it looks like some mags will stuff us with "Rat Look" this & that his winter, I have been building Rat Harleys since the begining of time but would never call me "Rat Stylezzzz". I have a friend who puts it 100% on the nose: Only dead fish travels with the current.....

I think the trouble is, we've all become used to the diversity and interest in most cars of a certain age that R-R has provided us with, so anything that has a strong fanbase for one make of car can seem narrow-minded to us. I personally think that Hoodrides is a good and refreshing idea, others may not but thats my opinion, I think the more people break away from the snobbery of what the 'Classic Car' scene caused for years and years it canonly cause the scene to become a bigger and better thing.

I should just point out that I'm not against the vehicles, by the way - quite the opposite in fact. I've been driving things (mostly Beetles and vans) like that for the last 15 years, one even won a "best rat bug" prize way before 'rat look' was recognised as a 'movement' in VW circles (we're talking 1993ish here... closest thing back then was 'rust and prime')... I didn't enter any competition, someone just picked it out in the car park!

'Rust'n'Prime' was the natural opposite of the 'Show'n'Shine' at VW shows at the time. I loved the show cars...which were at possibly their highest point (the combination of originality in design and high standards) in UK VW history...but there was a whole load of cars tucked away in car parks or behind tents in camping areas the deserved attention and warranted recognition....that's what Rust'n'Prime was about. Very few people saw the judging forms (designed by HytestA, I believe but they could definitely be considered as a set of guidelines for what we know as ratlook today. Cars like Scott Spencer's 'Albert II' '67 and the legendary 'Fastcack' would still cut the mustard in these rat-infested times ;D.

It now has UK Plates... it's a portugese van which came to the UK via austria... The swedish plates were 'to hand' when it was waiting for it's UK plates...

Ah yes, how we all miss her, stolen from a lockup if i remember correctly...although ginga might appear now and tell me I'm totally wrong, lovely car. Made me realise that shiny is a very bad thing.... Hoodride is a pretty cool site, there used to be a separate section for non german hoodrides, now its all together i think, never seen any of the blinkeredness that you get on some of the other car forums i visit, much like here really......i shall carry on posting there happily !
