Good work on that exhaust system! Looks like a proper manufacturers one! And I thought mine were good! ;D Random exhaust I made.. With some odd black patches on it.. Sorry for the mini hi-jack. Lovely car. Can't say I've seen one before but it looks awesome! Good stuff.

you will run into problems with the tramp bars when you lower it. i'm sure you will realise, but I will warn you beforehand . they will become angled down to far and will bind up the suspension. I was gonna shortern the tramp bars and move the axle brackets nearer the front of the axle. hey, why don't you go 4/5 link, with coilovers? later rwd sunnys had a 4 link setup. lot more work but sure your more then capable making the tramp bars shorter is a bad idea as the arc is smaller. there will be enough give in the leaf springs to allow the axle to twist around the arc of the present set up. i'm only going to drop the rear a tad anyway.

last minute entry to a goodwood track day. car didn't miss a beat and the temprature stayed spot on even though the engine was at 6000 to 7000 rpm lap after lap. the Datsun suprised a few people and didn't discrace itself . even I was suprised how well it went even on the cheapest of cheap tyres (they cost me £120 for four fitted) iv'e now got a good idea now what needs doing to make the suspension work better so after the activity day I shall pull it apart and totally go through the whole lot

would ave ad my stopwatch out too you would have to have kept it hidden. lap times on a track day at Goodwood are a big NO NO. and the exhaust sound test came in at 95 decibels

iv'e got a few days off work so finally iv'e got a day where the weather isn't wet. iv'e had the car outside under cover for the last month in all that heavy wind and rain and actually dreaded what i may find when the cover is dry enough to move. and to my amazement the car and interior are bone dry usually i find the gear knob goes sticky if not used for more than a few days. so a big thumbs up for the cover. anyway, i removed the rear axle but not before draining the axle oil. found a few nasties stuck to the magnet this being the worst iv'e yet to strip the axle to see where it came from. compared the Ford and Datsun axles and they look so similar that one must have been copied from the other. ignore the brackets on the Ford axle as it came out of a Caterham but the position of the brake adjuster and slave cylinder and even the handbrake linkage look so similar. in fact i'm going to use as much of the Datsun stuff as possible. another bit of info is that the bolt holes for the prop flange are exactly the same size and spacing as each other. only a little tweak of the prop locating flange will need to be altered. the nose length is within mm of being the same length so a Datsun prop should be correct enough to fit a Ford axle conversion. altering this axle for the 114.3 PCD will be easy due to the Quaife output flange being made for a small PCD'd Caterham. all i need to do now is make it fit. and probably get a new prop made as the diameter of this prop is rather large to clear the tunnel on full bump. plus i want to modify the springs or maybe fit Ford springs. we shall see

well this is where the bolt head came from so i set about and cut off the Datsun spring seats and welded them to the Ford axle mmmmmm LSD mmmmmm Quaife springs are off to be modified with an extra leaf and lowered at the same time. once they are back i can fit them to the car for a dummy build to get the top brackets on in the correct place

chunky well thats those bushes done. just need to mod the brackets Al put on for the tramp bars so i can remove the leafspring brackets to remake those bushes to change from rubber to nylon. using a solid nylon bush in the leafspring will make the leafspring try to twist rather than the bush on cornering. this will act like an antiroll bar as the springs try to keep the axle level. the reason for one thick and one thin is to move the leafsprings in a little away from the tyres. the axle brackets have been moved in already by the same amount. and done the next little bit. the axle is held onto the leaf springs with a rubber sandwich. probably to keep noise down but it will allow a bit of flex. so i made a locating pin so the axle can directly bolt to the leaf springs wont need the rubber or heavy metal spacer and if it needs lowering any further, i'll just move spacers around or make a block. these should keep the springs in check should be able to mock up the axle on the car this weekend.

can't buy shocks off the shelf but Spax will make some to your required length and end fittings then i made a tool to drill a pilot hole for the correct PCD using wheel spacers as a guide (i will need the spacers for the spare wheel if it ever needed anyway) trial fitted the axle using Escort lowering blocks and a locating ring to fit the Dat axle brackets then gave the axle a lick of paint well the axle is pretty much there now just need to fit the brakes . the drums will need a little filing of the stud holes from 108 PCD to fit the 114.3 PCD then they can go on. i though i'd just fit the wheels to see if the clearences are still OK this is without a drum fitted so they will come out a nats more but i prefer the way they sit under the arches compared to when they used to be level with the arches. to me it looks better and is more old school

mazda prop pcd is the same as the ford, handy bit of info that thanks, cheers thats one thing i haven't worked out. the prop was fitted to the Datsun axle which is the same PCD as the Ford axle. though the Ford axles do come with two differet flange sizes and i have the small one. the UJ's are the non replaceable ones and the same both ends (i assumed Mazda front and Datsun rear) not sure if they were from the same prop though as this prop is a specially made item. and it's massive in diameter but extremly light. maybe Alramone knows more about the prop? i'm just glad it fits although i need new uj's for it. iv'e been told a local company can machine the prop for circlips. just need to make a phone call.
