Still not sure whether it´s "retro" enough but here we go!
After regularly borrowing my mates van i´ve always been after a T4. They´re great to drive and probably the best towing vehicle i´ve ever driven.
As we definately need a tat hauler at oldbus garages and as my son passed his test last a couple of weeks ago what better excuse do i need to extend the fleet. ;D
After getting a feel for the (i´m not paying that much!) prices over here i decided to try and get a cheap one over in the UK.
Before i found a half decent one i grabbed this one for 74 Euros...
It has been stripped for spares but with me planning getting a RHD drive one and converting it over to lhd it was well worth it´s money as the front axle and steering are intact, the dashbord is still in there, the brakes were recently overhauled, it´s got a towbar, decent windscreen, newish exhaust and one or two other bits i´ll no doubt be needing
After placing an advert in the "wanted" section i got a PM from Disasterbus (cheers Kerry) pointing me in the direction of an ad on VZI.
"1994 2,4D LWB with twin rear doors and a bulkhead" ...exactly what i was looking for and to put the icing on the cake it was LHD too! ;D
After a quick phone call a deal was done and the collection for last weekend was organised.
After another one of our fun packed roadtrips...
retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=59368
....the van landed at oldbus garages Sunday evening
It didn´t have a towbar so i took the one off the spare one and fitted it at Grizz´s Satruday evening (well i had to get the Touran back home somehow)
I really should be getting stuck into the Capri but i wanted to make the most of the decent weather and instead of mowing the lawn i borrowed my neighbours high pressure cleaner and gave the van a thorough cleaning underneath.
It took me ages to get the 2" of cräp off the underbody but it was worth it.
I´ve been really lucky, although the van is dented from front to back it´s never been welded and is virtually rust free
the only bit that will probably need attention for the TÜV is the right hand rear wheelarch.
After playing around with the diesel pump in the UK before we drove back the van is now running well, it smokes a bit fully loaded but nothing spectacular, second gear is a bit iffy but if you change gear slowly it´s not too bad and will hopefully last long enough for me to get a spare gearbox.
The "to do" list
- service it
- get the electrics sorted - they´re a bit of a mess.
- get it through the german MOT (TÜV) and get it registered.
- adjust ride height and get some decent wheels on it
- garage paintjob - colour scheme to be decided on
- tidy up the interior and fit a CD player
- fit second tank and get it running on old chip oil
The "to buy" list
- rocker cover gasket
- set of glowplugs
- oils and filters
- new door seals and door cards
- bits and bobs for the chip oil conversion
- sheds loads of primer and paint
- central locking kit off deebay
- cruise control kit
- new ish drivers seat
- a few liters of underbody wax
Here´s a few "before" pics from yesterday......
I wonder if i can get my spare set of Cossy wheels to fit and through the MOT?

Total hours invested =2
Money spent today = 520 Euros - van
