thought it be about time I put this on here.
My final major project for my transportation design degree surrounds why people don't have confidence in electric cars, and after some research, in the next 10yrs I think manufacturers will be able to do incredible things with the emerging technology. think 560bhp with 1100nm torque from 1rpm! and batteries that last 300 miles and charge in a few minutes.
anyway, I have chosen to use motorsport as a promotional tool for the technology and like Audi did TDi I am doing electric, at lemans.
I spent forever reading lemans regs and looking at the aero package of the current lemans cars, and using a bit of "guesstimation" began designing a lemans car! this started from maybe 30 or 40 small side view sketches picking a few and developing them in perspective:
this, after some more development, then became:
and then I did a GA drawing of it to build a quarter scale model.
arches being put in
the idea is that you build one side of the model, and symmetry it across using a balancing bridge, as you can see, the other side is somewhat blank
at this point I decided to hack the entire front end off and modify the insides of the core of the model, to allow me to get extra depth in the vents
then I fixed it again! under the balancing bridge
WHeels! 13x18 fronts, 14x8 rears, in quarter scale!
I ahve today eventually finished the symmetry and the model is looking alright, it will be getting sealed and painted this weekend.
once this has been painted, (or primed at least) the model will be fenced off and some splashes taken off using a water based fibreglass called polydur and then a fibreglass male taken from that mold.
you may notice, that the rollover hoop etc are not finished on the clay, as I don't want the molds to try and tear my clay apart if I can help it, and hence little stigs helmet sticks out quite far. things like the rollover hoop will be added in on the fibreglass itself
more updates as they happen!
