Basically i've got some decisions to make all be it on a not particularly retro car......but here goes...
My 'sensible' daily car is a '99 Phase 1 Renault Clio Sport 172 in pearl black quite a sort after little car by the renault guys as only 117 were ever produced in that colour.
Its looking a little bit shabby after 9 years of use so its going to get a full respray in about 4 weeks but i have the urge to do some bodywork mods to it - now my heads saying yes because i love doing bodywork mods but it could ultimately affect future re-sale value if people are after an original example.....
All the mods revolve around smoothing the car are out a little bit giving it a bit of euro look, already lined up up some 8" wide Rota rims with 5" dish,
Body mods would include, debadged tailgate/bonnet, smoothing out all the swage lines in the front and rear bumpers, smoothing out the front number plate recess, shortening the rear tailgate recess to fit my private plate - so all fairly subtle mods and no nasty bodykits.
Now do i do it or not? purist friends are saying no but i'm thinking yes! anyone else modified a car then regretted it? or does a modified rare'ish car get more appeal? i don't know....
Any input welcome....

Its a Clio just mod it its gonna be at least 25 years before it returns to somewhere near its original value anyway.

Why not get the bits off another one to do the mods to so you could turn it back to standard for the purists?

id say a big no to that one personally. after the initial novelty has worn off i would regret it (not that id do it in the first place)
get it resprayed, perfect panel gaps, wash out the headlamps and other lenses and make it look tidy as hell will make it look x1,000,000 better and easy resell. the look you describe makes me think of what was big in 2001, was a while ago now and may look rather dated.

Well thats the thing i've noticed since I have bought mine 8 months ago the prices have already started to increase as there was only just over a 1000 ever produced majority being silver and as you can imagine over a 9yr period numbers will have started to decrease - one thing I have noticed though is that the renault 'scene' especially on cliosport.net is very critical against anyone doing anything as it is seen as to be 'ruining' a car - i've always been an VW head before where in the VW scene anything goes!!!

Question is what is more important to you, car as you want it to look or resale value? only you can answer that one Looking at the list of mods you are thinking about they are all being done to removable panels? if so why not get hold of spare panels and mod them, storing the orginals so that the car can be put back to stock when you sell?

Unless you can revert it back at a later date I would leave it. Styling mods that are in now may not be so in a few years time.

I think i'm going to go down the modified route to be honest as like you also pointed out there is going to be no actual mods to the shell itself, only subtle mods to bolt on panels which could be sold as modified and replaced with original panels if I ever felt the need.....

It's your car dude. What you describe sounds pretty cool to me. Most modded hot hatch employ a more is more, then chuck more wibblepoo on, approach.

Thats it i've decided i'm going to for it, keep an eye for a readers ride thread shorlty - i think my mgb below raised a few MG purists eyebrows at the last classic car show i went to but i think thats part of the fun and like you say its my car and if I like it then who cares? think i was just being a bit sensible when worrying re-sale value to be honest.....as i will get more enjoyment with it being a little bit individual than getting a few less £££ if i ever sell it.

I had an uber rare 2 door mk4 cortina-only 11 were left registered apparently. I got soooo much curse word for playing with it...
3 door cosworth front seats, capri 4 spokes, big bore ,sound system etc.
and then theres my estate-LOTS of curse word for that too
but at the end of the day its YOUR car so do what makes YOU happy! its the attitude ive adopted and it works for me ;D

I then wanted to start cleaning the interior as it stinks of wood (the material not the smell of a boner) best quote ever!

Plans sound cool, and as you say they are only bolt on panels and it could be returned to stock easily enough. Normally I'm not exactly what you would call a fan of MGs but I LOVE what you have done to yours, it looks awesome. A car should be how you want it to look. Why put up with something you're not happy with because you think it will upset other people if you make it how you want it? Good choice on modding it imo

Still be OK? ;D

Its only a bloody car who cares how rare it is? just modify it, if anyone really cares and starts moaning tell em to buy it and they can do what they want, Its only a Clio in an uncommon colour hardly gonna get people out burning history books and rioting in the streets. Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

with the mods you are talking about, i would source some decent second hand panels and perform the mods to those. Then i you want to go back to stock, you can do and you'll have all the original panels back together. personally, my thoughts are that ... its a renault clio, no-ones really ever going to care anyway! JUST DO IT! lol

I'd stick to reversible mods only and leave the body factory.

Spare panels are the way forward... thus creating reversible mods This is the fine line that most of us that modify old Japanese cars walk, as not that many are left!

You need to weigh up the money you could possibly lose vs the pleasure you'd get from it.If the pleasure outweighs the cost, then go for it. After all, people aren't bothered about the large amount of cash they lose driving a new car out of the showroom are they?

id go for the spare panels approch. (and get em while ya still can as there seems to be less and less cars that age sitting around the scrapyards.) I'm trying to stear clear of body mods on the mk1 and just stick to very subtle reversable things (and lowering lol)
