i love that ride!! Thats how low mine will be going! 411's were made up until 1972. In 1972 a few changes were made and it became the 412. The easiest way to notice is the front indicators. They were low on the front on the 411's, and raised higher on the 412's. There are other small differences to the front, (the badge changed location too) but they are very very very similar vehicles. Not much difference then - will have to look closer at the Googled pics now Cheers

Cool - cheers Keefy, it would appear that the general gist of spotting the age of a type 3/4 is done by judging its uglyness ;D i.e pretty, nicely formed car = early type 3 - Pig ugly car = late 412 ;D This ones very 'Renault 20' [ftp]http://www.type4.org/pictures/1970/411_filippo/view[/ftp]

lol, yeah that pretty much sums it up. I cant wait to get behind the wheel of the 411 though. i *think* they come with an eberspacher heater as standard, plus macpherson strut suspension. Should mean i can sit it on its and it will still drive pretty nicely.

you'd be surprised! mine had been lowered by a previous owner and behaved like a drunken fat girl trying to dance. f*cking lethal in the wet. took me 7 months to source the bits i required to correct this.ended up putting front struts off a 412 onto it. the maccy strut front end is different to that of a 1303 beetle, but with a little inginuity and imagination i reckon a hybrid could be made.then you'd have loads of suspension mods that are readily available. i love type 4s and i cant wait to see yours done.

well we spoke to a few previous owners and they said they handled lovely. We'll see. Either way, its going in the weeds lol. Its not like it can be worse than the benz, is it!? ;D I'm confused about the maccy front though - the vw part numbers 1303 part numbers. whats different about it mate? Hybrid coming up! if things go well it will be done by sunday! We are collecting it saturday and there are 4/5 of us sorting it out over the weekend. well, thats the plan anyway ......

the top mounts are different as are the bottom hub assemblies, bottom arms and just pretty much everything. but, mine was a really early one, they may have shared parts at a later period of their production

that gives me a little hope then, mines a real late 411. Crossing my fingers, it would sure make life easier. Thought it prob wont matter either way, I'm bound to just chop the springs and be done with it ;D

thats how mine had been lowered, and after a period of time had completely goosed the struts. which are a total nightmare to find. the eberspecher had been removed from mine

i have no idea if the eberspacher is still in mine or not. I do hope it is!! if the front is the same as the bug then i can def get lowerer struts which should solve that prob. Feck knows about the rear tho.
