Hi, The latest progress... Windscreen surroundAll cleaned off Cutting out rust I opened up the seam for a few inches with a chisel to apply rust killer on some light rust Making repair panels, recycling bits I cut off elsewhere BonnetWell, I've earned some stupidity points here! The bonnet was a bit rippled before I started, but I have made it worse when working on the underside. I thought I was being careful to avoid damage - but obviously not careful enough. So there has been more work getting it back to the right shape. Primed up and it will look OK I think BumperI am refurbing my replacement bumper. Here Steve is cleaning off corrosion with wire wool. I've done more work on the bumper, but I'll do this as a separate "how to" article when it's finished - it might be useful to other 140/160 owners. Steve was helping me on Saturday and also Kiran (Yoda960 on VOC forum) called in, and we had an inspiration break reading about the 240 T5 estate track car in PPC! All for now John

Is that before & after, or just different ones on each axle? The Vredestein Snow + are the only ones I can find in the right size for my Amazon, but con't find much info on them, especially whether they are ok to be used as a winter tyre, as opposed to being just a snow tyre. 164 is looking good too - VOC BKV 2011? ;D

The Vredestein Snow + are the only ones I can find in the right size for my Amazon, but con't find much info on them, especially whether they are ok to be used as a winter tyre, as opposed to being just a snow tyre. Fronts are Arctic winter remoulds. I wouldn't normally buy re-treads, but they were all I could get hold of after a lot of searching, and being German made and H rated (130mph) I thought they'd be good enough to try. Good braking and steering so far on snow-covered roads. I was going to get four but the supplier couldn't get another pair until January. So far, the Vreds are also impressive. They came up second-hand on ebay, but it's obvious they have only done a couple of thousand miles. They are a bit noisy with the knobbly tread pattern, but they grip well on snow and, if a wheel does spin, it digs out the snow until it hits the tarmac. I have not driven fast on them yet, but at moderate speeds all the tyres also seem ok on dry roads. If they are lairy in wet conditions, I'll get some Arctics for the back as well. 164 is looking good too - VOC BKV 2011? ;D Thanks, but probably not 2011 BKV... doubt I'll have enough funds to finish before then. Cheers John

Cheers! Will look forward to hearing your thoughts on how the Vreds are when when there's no snow, as I'm thinking of having a set as my winter tyres next year.

What an epic read this has been! Just read through the entire project in 1 sitting - think I'm going to go and rest my eyes now!
Glad to see the bodywork is SO close to being finished, shortly you can get back on the engine work and from there I can't imagine it'll take you long to get the car on the road! Keep up the good work! (John, Ellis, Steve and friends!) Your patience with the project is astounding.

Probably still a good while before it's on the road. There are some biggies that I need to save up for (re-trim, emerald ecu, custom exhaust manifold and system). Plus I want to build a new garage... But it will get there in the end and I'm enjoying the journey! If you want another big read, look at Steve's excellent Volvo 244 turbo project: retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=readersrides&thread=91474&page=1Cheers, and Happy Christmas John

Hi folks, Last update of the year... A lot of my time off since Christmas has been spent dealing with burst pipes, both at home (three) and at the garage today where we had a very big leak on the main pipe at the top (fourth) floor of the mill building overnight. It must have leaked tens of thousands of gallons. We were lucky in that the water coming through the ceiling in many places missed the cars that were stripped of paint, and also missed my friend's TVR (parked with the roof down). We have quite a lot of damage to stored parts though. The wet-vac was a godsend today, must have emptied it 60+ times. Anyway, amongst all the mayhem, I got on with some work on the car. Windscreen surroundThis area is now finished and I'm happy with how it came out. I found more rust at the top of the right A-pillar. There was a tiny blister that looked like a stonechip, but when I took off the paint there was a crack in the lead loading with rust underneath. This was cut out, treated, welded and filled. I dealt with some imperfections... ... then finished priming the surround I found another Volvo wobble... look at the top edge of the vent slots As well as the cars, I love the social side of the forums. "Rusty244" from VOC (James) came over from Manchester to introduce himself and see what we were doing. It was great to meet another old-Volvo enthusiast who's fairly local and I'm sure we'll see more of James. Finally, "Nick_ovlov" is coming down tomorrow, all the way from Aberdeen (9 hour bus ride, each way), to stay a few days, help with the cars (mine and Steve's), celebrate new year and generally have a laugh. Can't wait! That's all for now... next update early 2011. Happy New Year! John
