I am tempted with G33, I used to work at Cottage Classics (now Ginetta Heretige) and always loved them. Where abouts in Huds are you?

OK, next update: BonnetEven by my standards, I have been making a lot of dust lately! Stripping the bonnet of 7 layers of paint I used this type of wheel which was recommended by tonybmw (I think). It is really excellent. Although it's still a long job, this is much quicker than any other method I know - and after doing the whole bonnet the wheel was only 5% worn. Several minor dents to fill On the underside I am not going back to bare metal, just flatting. But some weird stone chip has been sprayed on before the last respray, you can see it around the edge of the triangular panel in this shot, extending a couple of inches in This stuff makes the flatting more difficult and it's a fiddly job anyway because of the shape. I'm part way through this I primed a small area to test for any paint reactions with the layers underneath - seems OK so far but I'll check it again in the morning Primed up the right rear arch That's it for today - more soon John

Yes those clean and strip discs are by far the best method I have come across for fast paint removal.
Great work on the bonnet, the extra effort on the underside will be well worth it when its all painted and complete

A short update, I didn't get as much done today as I hoped. I was delayed by waiting for the heating engineer... yep, we have no heating or hot water at home now... great timing! Then, the bonnet prep took longer than I thought. The test area I primed did not have reactions, but the finish was not good enough where it was on top of the stone-chip. So I took more of the bonnet back to bare metal. Primed. It's not brilliant, but with more primer and flatting it will be OK I have the luxury of two helpers tomorrow. Steve is bringing his friend Will, another young guy who is doing very good work on his Civic: retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=readersrides&action=display&thread=91473Right. I am off to the pub now to get warm! John

We made good progress yesterday - both Steve and Will were working hard. SunroofWe removed the sunroof panel in order to prepare and spray the roof properly and replace the edge seal which is worn. The panel is in good condition BonnetContinuing with finding and filling minor dents Windscreen surroundWill and Steve removed the metal clips that originally held on the bright trim (and also started rust) then cleaned the scuttle and screen surround to bare metal. I started cutting out the rust Left rear door/wingWe refitted the left rear door and adjusted the hinges. It does not fit perfectly because the top of the door is not the same shape as the wing (Volvo's fault) and the lower edge of the wheelarch sticks out too far (my fault - didn't position the repair panel quite right). I cut a slot in the wheelarch edge to allow it to be pushed in and rewelded flush with the door We did some work on the sill to get the bottom shut line right (no photo) and put a skim of filler on the top to match the profile to the wing. The guys worked hard all day, but here they were having a break eating a family-size bag of crisps that Steve brought! That's all for now, but I'm happy that it's moving on well towards the respray. John

Those are excellent helpers you have there, working on your own can be no fun Yeah they are really good lads. I think it's great to see youngsters who are properly into working on cars to a high standard. Both Steve and Will are doing impressive work on their own cars. (And Will is talking about wanting an old Volvo as well now, so I think the brainwashing is working!). And as you say, working on your own can be dull, whereas I find that having mates aound helps on motivation and makes it more fun - a bit of laughing and joking. And here's an old-Volvo tune for a giggle on Sunday night. I don't understand all the lyrics, but I think I get the message! John

Hi Will, It was great to have your help mate! You're very welcome any time you want to come over - just get a lift with Steve. And likewise, if you want a hand with yours I'm happy to do that, so don't be afraid to ask. John
