I spotted this yesterday afternoon and being so local got particularly excited about the possibilities. I rang the guy and organized a ride down tonight to assess the car - either for a project or a spare vehicle. Plans were made and phone conversations had. Just prior to setting off I get a phone call from the man himself telling me that he'll only let us come and look at the car if we take it tonight. OK I thought. That could be difficult (annoying as well as I had specifically expressed a great interest in checking it out and coming to do a deal). So I asked how much he wanted and was told £400 for the car. Yeah, you read right, £400 for a scrapper Rapid that is rotten beyond repair (an admission from the seller himself!!) I thought about it for a minute and called back offering £50 - low prehaps but the true value in my opinion. From here on I recieved true wkr responses like, "what did you say - nothing?!" I didn't actually click and it got to the point of saying "F-I-V-E Z-E-R-O" very slowly before explaining that this was the true value of the vehicle. It gets better though. After practically being told where to go he tells me that the cars scrap value is £100 and even if we offered £100 we still couldn't have the car because it's worth more in parts... ... ... and here is the best bit... ... apparently a Turkish bloke has already paid him £60 for the wing mirrors!! So basically guys - I did try - but failed miserably to save this car. I'm annoyed at myself for not being able to save it, but more so annoyed at the idiot using it as a money making service rather than allowing the car to go to some good causes. It actually makes me particularly said to think that the whole thing will now probably be cubed in the interest of "scrap value". My advice to you would be to try and get some sense out of the seller and take what you can from it ... but be prepared to be dealing with a right....!

The guy has a point, it is normally pretty hard to buy a complete car from a scrappy cos it will be worth far more in parts to him, especially as it can sit there for as many years as it takes to sell everything off it. It does sound like he was being a muppet about it though.

TBH I'm too annoyed with him to ring up about seperate parts just now. God know's how much he'll want for the engine though...!!

That sounds depressingly like some of the conversations I have with the scrapman across the way, and I've known him over 10 years now. It seems sometimes he'd RATHER cube it than take a lower offer than his just pulled a price out of my guess. Trouble is, the more you argue, the more it convinces him that you really want it and he should stick his ground. Last time he did this, it was an 1.8 cvh engine - non runner, missing bits, next to the scrap skip. I asked, he said £50. I said no. 2 days later, it was in the skip, and his monkey assistant let me retrieve it for nothing ;D

yeah, you did right. that thing is only worth £50 - I've paid less for better - and you didn't get too involved with it and get threatened with kung-fu. You got off lightly. the Kung-Fu black belt man was a whole story in himself Dave will remember him... anyway... don't beat yourself up. £400 will buy you a whole lot of good Rapid mate.

scrap is fetching £70-80 a ton so you offered the wieghin price & i'm sure hes beating parts buyers of with a stick.

You actually did the right thing. You can't save them all and the sheer greed of the vendor coupled with the fact he's trying to hold a gun to your head means he should go and boil his head. As soon as people start getting greedy it's time to put the phone down and walk away.

I'm surprised you expect a scrap yard to be operating to try save old cars rather than as a business? Scrappies generally don't care about old cars. I don't care about old computers, I just want to get paid. Its fair enough. The guy is owed what ever e paid, plus the hourly rate of whoever fetched it, plus his diesel, etc. £50 probably doesn;t cover the cost of the time to bring it in...
A reasonable scrappy should sell cars at a reasonable price. A mate bought his old Victor back after he saw it in a scrappies, he paid £200 for it. Scrapper probably made £50-£100 I dunno. But the point is THAT IS HIS BUSINESS.

I thought this was going like a story I heard about an American car breakers. Anyway he had a Pontiac or something in and this guy wanted the engine out so the guy craned it out with a fork lift. £500 says the scrappie. Oh, says the buyer, I only want to pay £300 for it. Oh, says the scrappie, I'd rather drop it in the canal than take £300 for it, at which point he gets ni the fork truck, drives over to the canal which runs down alongside the yard and drops the engine inthe canal. "now f*** off before I set the dog on you"
Some scrappies are a bit deranged. But the same, some scrappies are pished off with people come in their yards lecturing them about how they can't break that rare car up they should save it and compkaining about the price of parts expecting everything at a gift.

My local scrap man could be a bit that way too, he was happy to let you go and root round, then when you arrive back with an armful of parts and ask how much he wants, it'd range from next to nothing to a king's randsome. He had a very large dog which was not chained up, so if the price was more than I had on me, I'd place the parts in a neat pile, make my excuses and leave!
I guess it's a case of anyone in a customer facing job, if you have a curse word day and you're wound up, some poor sod is eventually going to push you too far and get both barrels!

i remember asking a scrapie about a part for a focus, he wanted nearly twice the price of a new part!

my local scrappy has loads of new cars and old... but he wont sell the whole things ever!!! and parts are allways steep prices... theres loads of cars in there... jags. mercs, blah blah blah... all in there for a reason.. I don't see why you tried to buy the whole rapid? if its beyond repair just get the bits you want.. or was the asking price more than you wanted to pay..? think about it , he probably could make more than hes asking in parts... and 60 quid for the wingmirrors doesnt sound strange at all oh and sorry dude but the : some idiot using it as a money making service: made me laugh alot. why do you think he runs the yard? hes not going to think... oh theres a retro scene or a skoda scene i better save this one (thats by his own admisson) rotten beyond repair

I never have this bother, i ring up (or go in the yard) and ask how much they want for a part, if its to much i say no thanks and wander off, sometimes they'll bargain and sometimes they just let you go, i've spent enough time in scrap yards over the years to have seen the idiots most of em have to deal with, its no wonder most of them are not very tolerant.

The old yard I used to use had a fairly primitive price list - I only used to scavenge newer cars for parts for ebay/forums to help pay the bills..
Lights £10 a pop (from 3rd rear brake lights to seriously expensive headlights), wings £30, doors £50, bonnets/boots £40, only very occasionally would they take the time to look at the parts and try and get a few quid more out of me - I'd just tell them how much I was willing to pay, only once did they refuse to sell me a set of HID headlights with all the ballasty bits for £20, this is back in the day when only the top of the top of the range stuff had them.

my local scrappie is great ,he has a great approach ,if a light for instance is out of his way without him doing owt a tenner is fine, if he has to remove it or move cars to make it safe to work on, its £20 , have to say though some scrappies are a bleddy nuisance and are making enough dough with the stuff hanging about! also i find it better to go buying from em dressed like em and with my best banger racers accent , 'i'll giver yer 100 quid fer that mate! don't ask tell!! it sometimes works [and if it don't run!! cos fangs on his way!!]

I never have any trouble with scrappies, I tend to blind em with my astonishing knowledge and if all else fails rudeness helps.
